Took this of my neighbours daughter using a canon EF 70-200 f2.8 L USM what a fantastic lens.johnnymcParticipantHi Iris,
I’m sure your neighbours will be happy with this candid shot.
I like it but I’m distracted by the sharpness (or lack of it) on the girls face (eyes in particular), it looks a little soft on my monitor.
A great pic however for the parents.
Best regards,
John
P.S. the lens you shot it with is my alltime favourite!
IrisParticipantThanks John For your comments,
This was one of my first shots using this new lens, and just getting to grips with the new canon50D. The settings were,
f/2.8
1/320 sec
ISO 125
focal length 200mm.I’m not to sure if its the canon being soft (or is this an urban myth) or whether it was my settings for this shot.
what could i have done settings wise to sharpen this, a faster shutter maybe? The neighbours were happy.!!
Thanks again.
miki gParticipantHi Iris. I like this shot. I think the problem of softness may be down to zoom lenses rarely give the best results when used at the widest aperture and using it at the longest focal lenght possibly amplifies any softness. In this shot however, when I viewed it 200%, it appears that the button at her collar is in sharp focus but her eyes are a little soft. Just keep an eye on the focusing points when using the lens wide open I think.
johnnymcParticipantHi Iris,
Miki G has hit the nail on the head regarding focusing points. Whilst this is my favourite lens, I initially had had to disregard several images due to using it at 200mm F2.8. The depth of field is quite shallow when shooting a person close to you. Previously, I may have forgotten that I had a few focusing points selected on camera, and as a result, eyes etc may have been soft. The lens may have locked on an item of clothing as Miki G mentioned. It’s great when used wide open for getting rid of cluttered backgrounds, just be careful when focusing. Make sure that you use select one focusing point on camera, focus on the eyes, lock focus, then re-compose and shoot. The lens is a gem (i rate it higher than my 85mm F1.2L prime), i know that you’ll love it.
Best regards,
John
RobMemberWonderful picture…
It can be a bit hit and miss getting such a central composition to work
well, but in this instance the direct engagement suits the picture perfectly…With regard to sharpness, well, with such a well-caught moment, it hardly
matters at all. It could be sharper, but it’s not important. Like this one a lot…IrisParticipantThanks Miki g i will definitely keep an eye on those AF points as they have caught me out before. If there was two people in the photo, and i wanted both of them to be in focus where would you point the central AF point, in the Centre? or would you go messing around with the AF points and try and have the left one on one person and the right one on the right person. i know that question all depends on what you want the end result to look like and it probably seem like a stupid question, but being new to DSLR’s Photography its probably not.
Thanks Rob, I’m glad you like this one, even if it is out of focus.
miki gParticipantHi Iris. In the case of trying to get two people in focus (presuming they are side by side), focus on any of them using the central focus point and with the shutter button held in the half pressed position, point the camera to the centre and shoot. While the button is half pressed, it will lock the focus until you shoot.
If you leave it go before you shoot, you will need to focus on one of them again. I hope that makes sense to you.
Oh yeah, make sure AI servo isn’t selected or else the camera will try to focus continually as you move it.IrisParticipantYa that makes sense to me, thanks. Of the three settings, (One shot, AI Focus and AI servo) you think that AI focus would be the best for that situation.
kenhParticipantmiki gParticipantI’ve never used AI focus yet so can’t say. I would use one shot. I must try out AI focus soon to see how it goes.
