Sony Alpha Lens

    Hi All

I have a Sony Alpha 350 with a 4.5-5.6/75-300 lens that I use for just about everthing at the moment, as the lens it came with broke after about three years of dedicated photography. :?

I am after a new lens to make taking portraits (i.e. weddings, parties…), landscapes etc easier because as you can imagine with my current lens you have to stand a fair distance to get any shot.

Having been through many shops and website, I have landed on the notion of buying the following lens online SONY SAL-1855 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 but I would appreciate other opinions before I buy it. I have used this lens before, as my sister has one, but would like to know if there is a better one or an alternative.

I love photography and take my camera and gear just about everywhere with me so any comments or feedback would be most greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

For portraits buy 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8, for landscapes and group shots something wider (it doesn´t have to be Sony, you can buy for example Sigma 10-20mm)

i find the 50mm a bit un interesting for portraits

an interesting uption for you maybe something like a 17-70 from someone like sigma, this would give you a nice complement to your exsisting lens

Thanks for the feedback, something to ponder on I think.

Are Sigma lenses easy to come by…

If you are looking for a good review website for all Sony lens check out Dyxum.com they have a database dedicated to the Alpha mount. The best portrait lens would be primes and the 50 1.4 or 85 1.4 or 135 1.8 would be of choice. Although the 135 on the APC x1.5 sensor would be a bit long . I myself use the 50mm 1.4 or carl Zeiss 24-70 but this is expensive. The SONY SAL-1855 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 I believe is a kit lens aswell. if you are looking for a zoom you could also look for a faster lens such as the 17-50 F 2.8 Tamron. which gets good reports and is a good all round lens I had this for a time before I got the Carl Zeiss.

If you are looking for a cheap alternative I think I still have the Sony Kit lens the 18-70 – I think or it may be the 18-55 that I could sell you for a reasonable price as it is not used.
