Sports Assignment payment.

    Hi All,
Just a question on what payment I should expect to receive or a ballpark figure from covering a Schoolboy soccer game for a local paper? It’s an offical assignment from the paper. Six or seven action shots, captioned with the players names and details of the game etc.
Hopefully this will become a regular gig from the paper. I presume I would be considered as a freelance photographer by the paper.

    Thank you in advance.

    JIMC.

    Hey Jim

It will vary depending on the paper… I would expect it to be around €30-€40 mark… Let us know how it goes..

It used to be €34.92 per photograph published by a prov. paper back in in the 90’s but I’m out of touch now as I only do them as a job lot assignment if needed. The daily’s would be more.

    Thanks Lads.

Sounds a little low for the effort required. Match is 30 minutes a side, traveling, editing and captioning. A fair amount of time required all told ! Not including use of equipment.

Hopefully the payments will be more.

The game today was called off due to bad weather, I still had to attend as I was not notified of the postponment. Local venue so not too bad.

Maybe next time and I’ll let ye know.

Most papers have fixed rates they pay. Contact the editor and ask for their rate card. That should clarify how much you will get.

In general, for local papers, the pay is very low.

Like Paul said – papers will have set rates in place – so give the picture editior a call. They may also cover your travel on a per mile basis

The other thing – up to you – is that you dont need to stay for the full game. If you only need 6-7 action shots you could easily have that done in the first half. Cover both sides while there so you have action from the winning side. You will learn to work smarter and quicker as you go and get to a stage where you are fully done (edited/captioned/transmitted) before the final whistle, if needed.

You may not make a living from it, but at least enjoy it.

Best of luck with the gig – let us know how you get on

So true, Sports is not a “get rich quick” thing, and it’s also the type of photography where you end spending thousands in long fast glass.

As was suggested, ask the editor out straight for their rates, and terms and conditions. There are some papers that will withhold funds unless you supply a tax clearance certificate!

Take pics of Team Sheet, then get team photos ask players to turn around and take one of their backs so you can get their numbers. take a selection of pics in first ten mins and head for the hills, I worked for a local for 6 mnths got paid €40 per game, helped me get press passes for Croke Park etc. As previous poster said you are not gonna get rich, but is good expeirience and you work will improve dramatically!
