I’m looking forward to seeing what Thomond park is like this Saturday.

I’d also have to agree about never giving away your images for free. Exposure seldom gets you anywhere … or as others say “People DIE of exposure.” :D A credit line in a magazine or website will seldom if ever generate further business for you. In fact, many papers, programmes, and such thrive on free images, and don’t want to pay at all. This can also cause you problems down the line when you do want payment, as has been experienced by many.

The best place to start taking sports images is at your local club. Local football, rugby, GAA, etc will provide plenty of scope for you to practice. I wouldn’t worry too much about Croke Park, Thomond Park, RDS, Dalymount, etc until you can produce consistent images of good enough quality.

Most big events do have ticket stipulations about commercial rights. That is to protect the club, and also protect those who have press photographic access. Even giving away images for free can be considered commercial use, if the images are used in commercial publications (such as programmes and websites). Just something to be aware of there.

Most papers will specify the quality/size of images they want.

Having your own website is a great way to 1) show your work, 2) generate interest, and 3) have the ability to allow downloads of your images (with tracking). I use my own website for such.

Most of all – practice, practice, practice. Any chance, anywhere. If I’ve nothing big on, I make sure to shoot at my local park where the local team play. I’ll shoot anything from my local park to Croke Park. It’s all about enjoying it.
