Spotmeter (B&W film)

I’m considering a dedicated spotmeter for my b&w shooting to give me more flexibility and control over my exposure.

The ones I see are the gun-type spotmeters from Pentax, etc and the Sekonic L-758.

Has anyone any experience of these meters, and perhaps things to consider re: ease of use that I may not be aware of ?

My intended use is in controlling the density of my black & white negatives, ala the zone system, et al.

For what its worth, in todays increasing security-paranoid world, I must say I am leaning towards the Sekonic L-758, if just for it’s non-weapon like appearance..

The Sekonic meters are excellent and the L-758DR is probably what you are looking for with the 1° spot.

You could be right Tony. The Sekonic looks like a great option, but is the spotmeter as comfortable/ convenient in use ?

    Steve,

Do you use the meter in studio, outdoors, or both ?

It would be nice to have the luxury of a combined incident and spot meter, but wonder about the durability of the Sekonic, as my most of my shooting is outdoors,

It’s a great metre Damien. It’s a bit expensive but you won’t look back.
It is weatherproof as well so is good for outdoor work as well as studio.

I know Barker Photographic one of the site sponsors sells them. Their prices are good and they offer excellent service.

Thanks Tony, good to hear they’re weatherproof. My main fear was the incident metering dome part, and how that might survive being jostled around a bag, or being shoved in a pocket, as most of my shooting is outdoors. I’m not exactly hard on my equipment, and am probably concerned needlessly :)

Just spoke with Paddy of Barker Photographic, and an easy and pleasant transaction later, I am now awaiting delivery of a Sekonic L-758D :)
