This is my first attempt at a raw conversion. I was out in Wicklow last Saturday and the combination of good weather and scenery was fantastic. What do you folks think? Personally I don’t like the branches top left of the picture. Is it possible to clone these out? Anyway hope you like it :D
AiscathParticipantHi your right about the branches and it maybe a little dark in the foreground, but otherwise i love this shot, very tranquil and good composition.
Brian_CParticipantYeah I think the foreground could be made a little brighter. Try making a selection of the foreground and playing with the contrast, saturation and brightness tools a little is called for. Becareful of that big tree when playing with the foreground brightness. It could well turn out to be a real cracker.
petercoxMemberThat’s a nice shot. I would suggest cropping out the river in the foreground – it doesn’t add anything for me. The branches in the upper left are indeed distracting and can relatively easily be cloned out.
Otherwise, spot on!

macgabhsParticipantThanks for the advice folks I decided to use a different raw file and start from scratch this time from a different angle so the branches on the left are not a problem. Also I think the last pic was dark because my laptop monitor was a bit tpp bright. Hope you thinks its an improvement!
PippateeMemberGreat improvement with the second shot…perhaps a contrast mask would make this a slightly more balanced picture…
Create a duplicate layer, desaturate it, apply a gaussian blur and change the blending mode to “Overlay” or “Soft Light”,
you can then change the layer opacity to taste,
sorry if I’m telling you something you already know,
great shot again!!
Philip
Madra RuaParticipantYes, the second shot looks better.
I do prefer the colour tone of the sky in the first version though.
In the second one the bright blue does seem to clash with the more subdued colours of the hills.Pippatee wrote:

sorry if I’m telling you something you already know,I didn’t know, so thanks for that, Philip
earthairfireParticipant2nd shot is much stronger – good choice!
I definately think that you could squeeze some more detail out of this file to bring it from a good shot to a great shot – all it needs is a little TLC in your RAW convertor / Photoshop. At the moment the foreground is lacking detail which detracts from the shot. Even this up a little, and I think you have a corker. Maybe process the RAW file twice – once for the background, and once for the foreground, and then merge. Follow that with levels & curves adjustment, and an unsharp mask and I’d bet you come out with a stunner.
If all of that makes no sense, let me know!
Hope it helps,
Tim
ReneMemberFine except rename it. St Kevins Kitchen, its the smallest item in the image…..
