The Saint Patrick’s Parade in San Diego, California is the largest Irish parade in the American West. One proud group marching in that parade are the reenactors of the “Fighting Sixty-Ninth” of the American Civil War. The Sixty-Ninth New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of the units composed of native Irishmen which formed the famed Irish Brigade. The Irish Brigade fought with valor and sustained horrific casualties in many of the major battles of the Civil War such as Antietam, Fredricksburg and Gettysburg.
The dedication and valour of the “Fighting Sixty-Ninth” and the Irish Brigade helped the Irish immigrants gain acceptance in the land which they adopted.
These reenactors keep alive the spirit of that gallant band of men, many of whom just stepped off the boat from their native soil, who gave all to defend their newly adopted country. Their green battle flag showed the Irish Harp and listed the many battles in which the proud regiment fought.
