Starting Early…

MarkKeymaster
Came back into the conservatory this morning to find my youngest son (almost 4) copying his old man.
On hindsight, I think that it might have been better in landscape as I feel it needs more space on
the left. But you take what you get sometimes. :)Anyhow, interested to hear what people think and if anything could be done to improve
as I’ve little knowledge regarding portrait photography. Light was natural etc…Nikon 50mm 1.8. f2 1/90
Thanks
steelydanParticipantI think its perfect Mark and does not need to have more room on the left. Its one of those shots that you will treasure in years to come, his look .focus is spot on and exposure is spot on also.I like it a lot.Sometimes you try grab a shot like that and its either exposed wrong or blurred. But this is a great image.
wjklewisMemberAllinthemindParticipantgreat expression…. maybe trim a touch off the right, I like it and I’m sure it will be in your family album.

All he’s missing is the pipe-Would agree with Simon about the slight crop-
I do like the use of available light,
though the magazine does seem to shadow the mouth area
maybe a little too much-
a very little-j
TompixBandonMemberLovely photo Mark. Well taken.
There’s something extra interesting in the fact that it’s B&W photos he’s reading about. Made me think whether there still will be photography as we know it by the time he gets out of college!!
I too would be inclined to trim away some of the couch on right.
As others have said – one for you to keep!
Tom.joe_elwayParticipantossie13ParticipantExpresbroParticipantReally gorgeous shot Mark..any technical issues are pretty redundant really when you look at the expression you’ve caught. Brilliant family shot…just wish I could get my son to read a photography mag… and he’s 15!!
fstop89564ParticipantRobMemberSuperb capture Mark. Excellent use of natural
light and really well framed. A trim off the right
isn’t going to make it any better than it already is.
One of your best in my opinion.
Terrific conversion too by the way.Rob.
joe_elwayParticipantMarkKeymasterThanks everyone for the kind response  and the tips/advice (I’ll try them out for sure) :D
The conversion was via the gradient map method as provided by Thorsten here:
https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?p=3606First time using it and was really happy with the outcome.
Again thanks for the kind words !!!
SodafarlMemberMark have to agree with all the previous posters a lovely shot and a great conversion.
SodaJohn GriffinParticipantGreat shot Mark, i love it . He looks so content and chilled out, i wouldn’t crop it, i like the way he sinks into the sofa, it gives a sense of comfort and adds to the mood. You should definately send it to the magazine in question, could be worth you something, it’s a winning picture and is more than a family album shot. Well done.
