This shot would not look out of place in any wedding / fashion / glamour / you name it / magazine. Superior quality Ali.
Personally I agree with David_S – the dark eyeliner acts like a magnet to the eyes, and I like it.
fstop89564ParticipantI realize it is not the same sort of “A” your going for but from this side of the pond I will give this shot an A+
very nice as usual
Just me two cents worth
DJHParticipanteverytime I come back to it, it’s the intensity of the eye’s that draws me in … fantastic capture, I like the composition. just as an aside … have you gone pro yet!
again, wow
Dara.AliParticipantThanks a mil guys, really appreciate the feedback – means alot. Thanks Tim for the A+ :) I haven’t gone pro yet as I have a bit more work to do to do on my portfolio and i don’t think my work is near good enough yet to do what i want to do, and that’s high fashion. I’m getting to know quite alot of people in the industry which is a start. They are all very supportive too, even though i’m very much a novice. Nervous about the jump though. I think is inevitable though. :?
fstop89564ParticipantAli
Is a Yank……..with an Irish background “A” equal to or lesser than a true Irish “A”?
just wondering :D

lol, absolutely equal.
SodafarlMemberAli, some lovely shots recently have to agree with all the rest of the posters, except one a Miss Boland who reckons she is only a novice. Can’t wait to become novice then, seriously though Ali I don’t think you have posted a picture that I haven’t liked.
Good luck with the “A”.
SodaDenverDollParticipantHi Ali!
Wow..how did I miss this?
This is gorgeous and I have to say I agree with the others who appreciate the darker eye treatment. Her eyes are really outstanding and for me this photo IS all about the eyes. She has gorgeous blue eyes and the eyeliner highlights this. I don’t see ~evil~ at all…rather… I see ~bright and charming~!!!
This photo totally works for me in every respect. The focus and lighting are spot on and your model and client will be well pleased I am sure :D
Thorsten~~~your comment piqued my curiosity as I haven’t seen you post much of your work here so I followed the link to your site and saw similar eye treatment on a model name Nikki there. It was nice..and it certainly didnt scream ~evil~ at me there…so I was wondering if maybe you weren’t being a bit over critical of a really really decent shot here?
SteveDParticipantNice shot Ali, I like the high key look and I guess the dark eyeliner is an ‘anchor’ of sorts in the image. I would ‘sort of’ agree with Thorsten about the verticals, but wouldn’t be sure until i saw the image without them.

Don’t panic DenverDoll, I can link you to lots of Thorsten’s work if you want me to?!

Yep, gotta agree this is a lovely image.

So Steve…….Like I said…I saw Thorsten’s site.. he can send me more links if he wants..I love to look at photos ..obviously!!

That is what I said~~~~~
Personally, I think the dark eyeliner makes her look “evil” and isn’t in keeping with the otherwise “angelic” look of the image – but that’s just me and maybe that’s just what appeals to others! But I also think it takes away from the eyes themselves, which actually look quite lovely if one looks hard enough through the blackness Wink Often times what works on a “live” subject doesn’t work in a photograph and while I generally find dark eyeliner quite appealing on a person when meeting them face to face, it doesn’t necessarily follow through that it will work in a photograph.
That is what Thorsten said ~~~~and that is the part I took issue with…if you read my whole post and not take bits out of context it all makes more sense…
:roll:I would hope anyway..
SteveDParticipantYes DenverDoll wink wink! I’m afraid you made the venom in your comment a little too apparent! I don’t think you can spin yourself out of that one!

Great, I think all comments ought to do that!

Didn’t really feel all that welcome here to be honest, so I held back a little. Thought I’d give it another go though, but in hindsight that may have been the wrong thing to do as it’s quite obvious that a very distinct clique has formed on this forum which doesn’t readily welcome outsiders. I can’t help but think that’s why so many others have left the forum too.

Yep, agreed. She’s a lovely person, but I didn’t particularly like the eye makeup on her during that shoot either. But given the fact that I only had half an hour with her after travelling up from Cork, what was I to do?

That’s very observant of you and absolutely correct. I think as the quality of someone’s work improves, the level of the critique must surely become more critical too in order to keep pushing the boundaries, no? If someone of lesser experience had posted a lesser image, I wouldn’t have provided the same level of critique as that wouldn’t be fair. I think Ali is a big girl now and can take critique on the chin and doesn’t need a spokesperson to speak up for her.
By the way, I was under the impression that critiquing critique was against the rules, but sure if one person can break that rule, so can I ;-)
ThorstenMemberOK, this is becoming an eyeliner critique thread, but here goes anyway… Ali’s shot is a nice high key shot in which the subject has very light hair. This makes the dark eyeliner stand out even more. Nikki on the other hand has dark hair and I wasn’t shooting high key so it doesn’t stand out as much. That doesn’t mean I like it, it’s just an observation that is worth making with respect to my use of the term “angelic”.
AliParticipantI’m absolutely appauled at how this thread has ended up. If i wanted to baby sit tonight, I would have!!!.

Thorsten, you are hardly an outsider with over 1600 posts. I’ve never read such tripe before in my life.
