Strange Problem
-
pandrews2000Participant
I have a strange problem with both my Canon 24-105 and 70-200. when I look through the camera with either of these lenses there looks like what I can only describe as noise or a flim of some kind. I have cleaned both lenses and know it’s not the camera as I have attached them to other bodies i have and don’t have a problem with my other lenses. Anybody have any ideas as to what it might be the problem. This noise also shows up on photos and also causes a slight focus problem.
rc53MemberIt might be dirt or gubbins on the focussing screen. If it’s the 5D, the screen can be removed for cleaning.
However, this shouldn’t affect the images. Auto-focussing problems are a different problem.Could you post a pic or two, from the camera with problem, and from the camera without problem.
pandrews2000Participanthi rc53. I tought it could be the focusing screen but the same proplem is evident with my 40d aswell. I even replaced the focusing screen on my 5d yesterday and the problem persists. Besides it is only the 2 lenses i mentioned that I have a problem with. My 85 and 50 are fine.
The problem is causing images taking at say iso100 to look like those taking at say 1600 ie. they look like they have noise. Im thinking the auto focus problem is not an auto focus problem but blur of some kind caused by this problem.
Do you know anything about condensation could this be causing the problem?
Thanks for the reply
scasMemberrc53MemberA problem with the lenses, then.
Is the auto diaphragm working?
Are the pins dirty? – others suggest cleaning with a rubber.pandrews2000ParticipantI am almost 100% sure it is not the camera bodies as it only effects 2 lenses and not a focusing problem. I have tried them on 3 bodies now and the problem persists. Both L lenses, kinda makes me question if it’s really worth paying the extra for them.
Dominic 7ParticipantHi, Is the aperature opening and closing down properly on these lenses, if you look through the FRONT of lens while its mounted is aperature FULLY opened?!
Alan RossiterParticipantCould there be a layer of condensation in the lens body and in the internal surface of the glass? Maybe try leaving them in the hotpress for a few days?

Alan.Exactly
How do you store your lenses, were they exposed to dump or sudden changes in temperature?pandrews2000ParticipantIrishwonkafan, that’s a good idea I will give it a go, and let you know if it works.
Generally I keep my lenses in the cases I got with them and store them safe so no chance of damp. I usally take care not to expose them to sudden changes. But there is still a possibility the temp change was still to great.
Alan RossiterParticipantThose bags of silica that you get with electrical goods – I put one of these in my camera bag to draw out any moisture that may build up. Going from a warm home to winter conditions may just be enough.
Hope it works.
Alan.
pandrews2000ParticipantTried putting the lenses in the hotpress for a couple of days, but no luck. I’ll have to ship it to Canon.
