Stripping out EXIF Data

Every now and then a student with a fairly new camera sends in homework that has no EXIF Data. The message is usually “No EXIF Data available”, but the students don’t know how this happened. Does anyone know if it is possible to deliberately strip out the EXIF data and, if so, how do you do it?

If you copy and paste the full image into a new file in photoshop you loose all exif data as far as I know.

I think that if you open and save in “Paint” the EXIF Data is lost, or partially at least

Yes, it is possible to deliberately strip out the EXIF header and for very good reason too. By stripping out the EXIF header you reduce the file size – an important consideration when trying to optimise image file size for web use. Photoshop does it when you use the Save for Web feature. I would imagine that some of the many free file size reducers that are available probably do it too, unbeknownst to the user. I often use the Faststone Photo Resizer because it’s got very useful batch processing capabilities including the option to dump the EXIF header.
