Stuck between 2 lenses.

Hi guys, new to the forum.

I’ve started doing a lot more photography lately especially indoors (mostly photos of people, usually will be 1 person making a speech or else a photo of 2 or more people standing together etc..). Because of how frequently I do this now, I want to upgrade my glass as the kit lens just isn’t cutting it anymore.

    I’m suck between 2 lenses. The Canon 17-40mm f/4L, and the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8.

Both of these have their advantages. The Canon has a wider angle, which can be handy in smaller rooms seeing as I’m using a cropped sensor. The Tamron offers the wider aperture which is nice to have on low light situations, and it also has image stabilisation.

I’m torn between these 2 lenses at the moment so any advice would be extremely helpful.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Between the two lenses the I think your only choice is the Tamron. With the kit lens you currently have 17mm and f3.5 so the 17-40L will be worse in low light. Its a sharper lens but indoors your probably wont have the light and will end up losing sharpness by increasing the ISO. The Tamron will give you an extra stop over the 17-40 which will double your shutter speed.

If you want more light, the Samyang 24mm F1.4 could be an option, its reasonably wide and very fast but its one focal length and manual focus only. I have the 35mm and its a great lens.

What’s the main limit to using the kit lens? Low light conditions?

Hmm, thought I had typed a reply to this post earlier..

For event work like you describe, I think you need either a fast zoom and a flash you can bounce, or else a fast prime whose field of view will allow you to get the shots you need. On a cropped sensor, the 17-40 will simply be too slow imo.

Welcome to the forum also :)

    Thankyou.

I’ve decided to go with neither of these lenses, and instead to go with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and just hope that I don’t upgrade to a full frame anytime soon. Everything I’ve heard about this lens so far has been good.

Also the kit lens just isn’t a great lens. Focusing is slow and loud, and image quality isn’t even close to other lenses I’ve used.

Good choice, and nice lens. Don’t forget to report back here, and let us know how you get on with it :)
