Studio lighting question help

I got a message with some of the deals Birminghams is doing for november and I noticed they have a paterson kit for sale.I checked there site and they dont have them there.

Is the paterson brand anygood?

Whats the difference between reflector and softbox kits? I plan to use the kit for outdoors for doing night shoots etc.

I may do a family photo at one stage but wouldnt be my main object.
