Studio space dimensions

I have an outhouse including a garage behind my house which I am planning to convert to a home studio. The two rooms/sheds are relatively big and the plan is to knock it into one room. Measuring of the rooms today, it measures a little over 10ft long by 7 ft wide. Allowing for dry lining and I estimate I am looking at at least 18/19 ft by 12/13ft size studio.

Is this an ok size to operate a home studio from do you think? I am looking at doing children’s portraits and communions eventually but just wondering if the studio will be big enough. Would love to hear your opinions.

Hi Helen,

I would say the dimensions you quoted should be fine. Yes it will be a little compact especially if you’ve got no other rooms off the main studio but if this is your first studio it’ll do the trick for you. It’s important to consider your ceiling clearance as well, depending on what your lighting and other equipment setup will be. Also you might want to consider how you’re going to heat the room. Unless you’re going to be photographing fruit I’d say a bunch if freezing subjects won’t look their best in the pics :) Electricity supply as well is another thing to think about.

Thanks for that Pat, I am lucky in that the ceiling space would be very high so that is a plus. I have to get electricity installed so was thinking of getting a little storage heater installed as well for when I would have models/clients in. I am really looking forward to setting it up. Lots of work to be done but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Happy New Year Pat.

I converted from this….

to this, and it’s working out fine. Not ideal, but you have to go with what’s available. Best of luck.

Thanks Isabella. As I said you have to do with what you have unless you’re going to build. I’m no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m learning. This side of photography is all new to me, I am predominantly a landscape tog, but this just took my fancy recently.

Wow Pat that is amazing well done and congratulations. Thomas, not started yet but the builders were here on Tuesday to measure and give me a price, as I also need to have my kitchen gutted as well and have been looking at kitchens. Both will be a big project – so it all depends on my local credit union so fingers crossed. I will let you know when (or if) I get the green light. Fingers crossed :)

Thanks lads, yes it is great to have it. I mostly take my grandchildren in it as I haven’t had any requests yet :( . My credit union was responsible for the finance also, it’s just a hobby and I enjoy it so it’s worth the expense. :D

Thanks Thomas – got my quote back today so its a case of kitchen v. studio now but sure we will see. :)
