Suitable lense for sports photography?

I am currently in the market for a good lense for sports photography, especially for GAA and soccer games. I have a Nikon D80 and a 18-135mm lens, I am now really thinking of buying a far bigger lens. I have saved for it and have a good budget. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
suspectmonkeyMemberNo expert on the matter, but I’d take a look at the 70-200 F2.8 end of the market. Not sure what Nikon’s offering would be like in this area, but there seems to be quite a few fans of the Sigma 70-200 F2.8. There are a few guys shooting soccer matches etc. in the Sports section, hopefully one of them will be better informed to give you advice on this :)
miki gParticipantNo expert here either. I have read some posts where the lads were recommending longer focal lenghts ie 300 or even 400mm, but you would need a small f/number ie f/2.8. Not sure if you can get zoom lenses to fit the bill.
Sgt_MajorMemberThe nikon 70-200 f2.8 is a stunning lens. I use it a lot for motorsport.
markst33ParticipantThe sigma 70-300mm is pretty good too. Downside is its a 4.5-5.6f. You could always crank up the ISO to compensate.
Whats your budget ?stcstcMembera very popular lens is 300 2.8 but its about 5k
the 70-200 2.8 is good but will find it doesnt always have enough reach

Whats your budget ?My budget would be from 1500 to 2k, and the latter would be really stretching it. Also I’m heading to the U.S in a few wks, was thinking of buying over there. Advisable?
Thanks for your helprangaMemberstcstc wrote:

Steve, I would love to purchase the 300 2.8 but unfortunately my budget wouldn’t allow for it, and the 70-200 2.8 not having the reach is what I would be worried about…
JetPackParticipantIf it was me I’d wait buy in the states. There are loads of shops that sells at very good prices and especially if you know what you are looking for.
Good luck
BMParticipantI had been looking at:
Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 – bit pricey
Sigma 100-300mm f4 – good lens not as pricey
for sport. I eventually went for the Canon EF 300mm and find the lack of zoom a bit of a limit, however I find I do use the reach of the 300 (I also have an old EF 80-200mm L f2.8).
markcapilitanParticipantMy budget would be from 1500 to 2k
Then you can easily get a 300mm f2.8 for that. I know I sold one a few years ago (dumb move!), but bought another used one for about 1400, in perfect condition.
paulParticipantIf you can get a 300mm f/2.8 within your budget, then go for it.
Other than that, a 70-200mm f/2.8 is very good.
I’ve never used, but believe that the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 is also worth considering.

what about the 70-200 with a 1.4x on it?
That can work well, depending on light. It gives you an f/4, so if light is poor you may struggle. In daylight it’ll be a good combination.

Could u recommend any place that would sell one for that price?
