Suitable lense for sports photography?

If you have only one camera body, a Sigma 120-300/2.8 would probably make sense. Never had one, but it has got good reviews, and you can probably buy one for close to 2k new.

Keep an eye out on Ebay, they do come up every so often. More often than not it’s the non-IS version, but that lens is sharper than the IS anyway. This seller in particular ian.hobday gets great gear from Japan, generally in perfect conditions, with good prices.

Cant beat the Nikon 70-200 f2.8, great lens, pin sharp, very fast at focusing, and even with the 2x TC it’s still great for sports. Used with out the converter is a great lens for portrait, weddings.. anything really, and for 2k you’ll pick up a lens with VR1 and have change left over, or if you wait a while you can get the new VRII models.

My 70-200VR cost me £1400 not very long ago.

I am currently in the market for a good lense for sports photography, especially for GAA and soccer games. I have a Nikon D80 and a 18-135mm lens, I am now really thinking of buying a far bigger lens. I have saved for it and have a good budget. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nikon 300 F4.. I use this lens allot for sport.. about 1000 sterling or so.. nice and sharp..

I just got a 70-200mm f2.8 sigma lens. it is great, and much less pricey than the canon version and I presume cheaper than the nikon version.

anyway 70-200 on a cropped lens seems pretty good length but I have to say I soot interiors mainlly so yhis is not my area of expertise

Can I ask you where you bought it Brian? I’m keen on getting one of these.

my advice would be to hold out for the 300mm 2.8 at least, a GAA pitch is a lot longer than a soccer pitch, so with a 70 -200 lens you would have to move around the pitch to get a decent amount of shots, most GAA games are held in the afternoon and with poor lighting conditions in Ireland, it would be wise to get a 2.8 lens.
    A 400mm would be ideal, if not a 300mm f2.8 would be my choice….

How does a 500mm f/2.8 sounds for you? Have a look at this link :)
