Number 2 is excellent Pat, well captured. Did you send that into Astronomy Ireland, I’m sure they would be delighted with it. You certainly were rewarded for getting up early.

Cheers Dave, I must do that. I had cloned the spot when I saw it as I thought it was a dust bunny , but when someone on anothersite mentioned a ‘sunspot’ I reconed I hadn’t got dust after all :)

Haha, what a dust bunny it would be! Great shots!
Now, if I remember correctly what my physics teacher told me and it is true (he was quite the messer), then..when the Sun is not ‘white’ in colour, especially at sunrise/sunset, then it is not the “real” Sun,yet. It is more to do with light creating some sort of an image because the Earth is round and the light has to come around it, breaking angles of light with our atmosphere, etc etc, so until we see a bright bright ‘white’ Sun, it is just like a hologram!
Now, this is how rumours get started and your Sun is already way pass the horizon line as well, haha. Just thought I won’t give the you the usual ‘well done’ comment but try make it sound interesting :D
Still- well done! Nice to see something different here for a change! :)

:? I don’t know whether to say thanks or what, as I’m confused here, but I’ll take it as complimentary. Many thanks Vee for taking the time to look and reply.

 when I read it back now, does sound confusing. Was just wondering if you know that the picture is of a “hologram” of the Sun, not the real thing :D Great shots!, as it was all one big compliment still : )

Thought I’d landed in an episode of Red Dwarf there for a minute  Kind of understand what your teacher was saying alright Vee but it’s probably better expained for plebs like me in this link; http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/%28Gh%29/guides/mtr/opt/air/sun.rxml
Anyway, intersesting shot Pat. Something very appealing about it and the different tones in the actual sun itself are unusual. Was it foggy to say you could shoot it safely when it was so high above the horizon? Also, if that is a sunspot, would it not be visible on the first shot as well?
    Mark.

Aha well spotted Mark…no pun intended!!!!
You see when I started processing the image I thought it was a dust bunny and automatically cloned it. I then put the image on Facebook and one of my friends commented that it’s a wonder there isn’t a sunspot visible….so that got me thinking!!! and I had a look at the original and re-processed the close up. I then sent it to Astronomy Ireland and they have confirmed that it is “Sunspot 1486”
So in the first the spot is cloned and isn’t in the second. Thanks for taking a look Mark, I appreciate your comments. I must have a look at your link and maybe I would understand Vee’s teacher a bit more :)

That really is an amazing photo, would love to know how you managed it without
blinding yourself. What lens and settings etc, filters??

    #1 for me

#2 you could create in PS

Haha, oh yes, words like refraction and concentration of atmospheric particles explain it much better
I was only trying to give some insight. As they say- know your subject when (photography) shooting it.
Besides, sunrise only takes a glimpse only to happen apparently. Sunsets are a bit different.
Nothing bad or negative meant by all this, just to make it clear. And well done on catching the sunspot, which is now confirmed even :)

Hi Jenny, I had intended to go to a certain place and had just parked and got the gear on my back and set off through a forest track. I then spotted the sun. I thought this is rather unusual for such good vision and it’s so high in the sky. I thought I had but seconds to get an unfiltered shot of it so took out my 5D mk11 and mounted a 100-400L and shot away at full zoom at 5.6. No filters and no blindness from viewing it. I had loads of time to take as many shots as I wanted because it stayed like that for ages.
With regard to post processing…my normal adjustments in PS5 is levels, curves and sharpen, now I think I might have boosted the reds and yellows a bit, but that’s about it. No real trickery involved. Maybe Vee has a point re; the hologram, I don’t know. I haven’t had time to read Marks link as yet.
    That’s my story now :)
