Sunrise over Squince

Hi
Took this photograph of a (slightly disappointing) sunrise at Squince Harbour, West Cork.
Camera: Nikon D200
Exposure: 0.125 sec (1/8)
Aperture: f/20.0
Focal Length: 18 mm
ISO Speed: 100Tried turning it b/w but not sure of the result. Would appreciate comments!
AnneMarkKeymasterHi Anne,
FYI, I edited your post so that the photo would display as you only posted a link to the webpage its on
and not the photo itself. You can edit the post yourself and you’ll be able to see what I did to make it work.
Thanks :)
shphotoMemberI think this is really great, i love the mood the b&w gives it the sky is brill, well done.
miki gParticipantHi Anne.
I’m not one for landscapes, so my comments may not be of much use. I think the use portrait format actually works well here. There is a nice lead in to the scene. I wouldn’t be too sure of if the placement of the horizon is in the best place being halfway up, but it looks good to me as both the water & sky look interesting. Maybe a lower viewpoint would add more interest to the foreground. The use of B&W works very well too with what would otherwise be a disappointing sunrise. Well doneaomahonyParticipantThanks Mark! As usual in my hurry I missed something – this time the [img]tags! Thank you for your help :)
Thanks Sinead and Miki G for your compliments. I don’t know though Miki G – for someone who says they’re not one for landscapes you seem to have a pretty good handle on it! ;)
jb7ParticipantI’d agree with miki, so no need to repeat what he said-
I’m not a big fan of 3×2 in portrait orientation, for landscapes,
and there’s a possibility that removing some sky from the top might improve a very good picture-Nicely put together shot-
aomahonyParticipantthanks jb7
Just wondering if the comment about the 3×2 is a personal preference or if it is a ‘rule’ along the lines of the rule of thirds? Is there a ‘better’ ratio for portrait shots of landscapes? Still learning here
Also wondering about the lower view point – before I go there again – wouldn’t a lower angle mean that there would be less of the water visible? And that the rocks, especially on the right hand side, would merge together? I get that it would emphasise the stones in the foreground but still wondering – guess the only way to know is to find out!
Anne
jb7Participantjust a preference-
though I think that the thirdy thing would automatically happen if you applied the crop I’m thinking of-There isn’t a rule, you can do what you want-
some people choose much longer vertical proportions for their pictures.flufduffyParticipant
