Sunrise / Sunset

KPMParticipant
After seeing Brandymans image, using Thorstens method, I had great fun at the weekend experimenting.
Unfortunately, I’m now hooked and spending hours trawling through my library for suitable images. Here are a couple. Both taken on Portrane beach, one at sunrise, the other at sunset. I don’t think the small size does them justice. I have a series of 3 images like these, printed A3 size and they look really cool.
All thoughts / comments appreciated.

RobMemberNice one Kevin, good technique. While I’m not completely won over by the first image, that second one is a cracker! Really vibrant colours. Bet it looks the dog’s proverbials printed A3 size. 8)
SwordieMemberWell done, Kev.
I think they work very well.
Which method did you use? Did you pan the camera or Photoshop still pictures?AliParticipantExcellent Kevin, nice to see people getting inspiration from others on the site. I love both shots but automatically drawn to the vivid colours in the second.
Very nice :)ValentiaMemberThey are both fabulous Kevin, but the first one does it for me. It just appears so real. I have seen that, the second is great but more in the head than reality.
positronMemberAgree with Valentia here – first one is brilliant, second one looks.. eh, not sure (probably its the dark shade in the water.. ?). Have to say, I really like the first one!!
KPMParticipantThanks for the feedback folks, I don’t really know which one I prefer, but they are just two of a series of 6, all of which I like in their own way.
Paul – they are done post processing. I do however fully intend on dragging the 6*7 with me some morning along with a polariser and a few rolls of velvia 50 and giving it a try. If any of them work I’ill be as happy as the pig in the proverbial. Sadly, unless I really push myself, it will probably go the way of my eternal diet and quitting the fags !!
I’ill let you know if I succeed (the photos that is).

ciaranParticipantVery nice shots. Any tips on how these were achieved?? I know you mention Thorstens method, but can’t find it anywhere. A before and after with some instructions in between would be really useful.
RobertoMemberKPMParticipantCiaran,
in regard to how they were achieved, its relatively simple, once you have the right type of images to start with.
Its just a case of applying motion blur, but you need to insure thats its applied parallel accross the image. I have found that the best images were just before sunrise / sunset, although both Thorsten & Brandyman applied it to great effect with daylight shots. The amount of blur you apply is up to your own personal taste. What to watch out for however is that there are no specific objects in the images (like the sun, or an island etc.) as the blur from these can detract from the overall image, but thats just my taste, someone else might like it. The more lines you have in the original image the better the effect (in my opinion) so it would be good where you have an image with waves on the shore etc. I’m not great using PS so my technique is a bit rough & ready, I’m sure some of the more advanced users could get better results, but this has proven to be a real eye-opener for me in regards to PS and I’ill have to sit down and read the manuals / guides etc. again over the next while.
The real deal is to achive a result using film, with a long exposure and panning. I intend to give it a try some time.
If you want to see a before & after let me know.
Regards
Kevin
