Sunset in Howth

Hi, I’m back for some critique. Haven’t had much chance to get out and about, so going to try and make the effort.
brendancullenParticipantHi Anthony – and welcome back. The more active members…the better for everyone.
#3 is the best of this collection in my opinion (light & colours in the sky).
The horizon is on the bottom “third” – which is good – but all three images lack some foreground or main focal point of interest. Your vantage point is way to high…but would have been OK if there was for instance a Tall Ship in the bay or lighthouse etc.
Having the sky filling only the top third of the frame might have been a better option also – as the dark clouds are ….just too dark.
Getting a correct exposure when taking backlit landscapes/seascapes is nearly impossible due to the dynamic range of light – so it’s always nearly essential to either use some kind of filter – either a hard or soft Graduated Neutral Density….or bracket the shot and blend the images together.
My top tip for nailing a really good landscape/seascape – is firstly know exactly the shot you want well beforehand – have your research done into location, tides, sunset times – then set up and frame the shot 30 min before sunset – then wait…and wait…and wait – then take a bracketed sequence every 2 minutes from about 10 minutes before sunset until 30 minutes after sunset….without ever moving the camera.
Don’t scutter around trying to get 3 or four shots as none will be as good as waiting for one perfect one.
If the right light is not going to happen – pack up and come back another day. Look at the sky and weather forecasts like clockwork….and you’ll soon know when a great sunset will happen. Late Autumn is best for sunrises and sunsets.
Check out this guy for some inspiration on composition and use of dawn & dusk light.
