Sunset pictures

    Hi,

I was out on Tuesday night fishing in Portrush and there was a beautiful sunset which I really wanted to capture over the rocks. Some of the pictures turned out really well when the sun was about to disappear. The earlier pictures suffered terribly from glare off the sun however. Would using a polarising filter resolve this issue? I’ll try to post an example picture or two.

    thanks

Hi Brian, if I havent already said it Welcome to the site :) You will probably
get more response if you put your posts into the various catergories for C & C
ie Landscape, etc. Saying that I like the picture though the sun is a bit dominant,
a polariser would have helped but with the light levels low you would probably have
needed to use a tripod as the shutter speed would have been a bit longer, maybe if
you had waited just a few minutes longer it would have lost some of its glare and
might have been better. I love the silhouette of the fisherman though it is a bit on
the soft side as he was obviously casting at the time and the movement was captured,
again down to slow shutter, but a good shot and nicely composed.

Ha! I didn’t want to post it for C&C as I knew it wasn’t great, I just wanted to know if a polariser would have helped. I did get a few similar shots later on of the same fisherman and they turned out well.
I know what you mean about a tripod, I didn’t have one at the time, I do now though :)

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Brian. I think the use of a lens hood would probably help. The flare is usually caused by light striking the front element of your lens and being reflected inside the lens by the other elements. A nicely composed shot though nonetheless.

    Hi Brian,

Getting advice on topics like what would sort out certain image issues is
part of what the site is all about.

Also it would probably be better if you embedded the image so that it shows
at a viewable size when we open your thread rather than having to click on
    the image.

I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself re this image because I think it is
    a very good effort.
There is nice action going on with the fisherman and I like the sky.
The sun is quite strong in the frame and I wonder what the image might
have looked like snapped a few moment after the sun set.

I also think it might benefit from a little clockwise rotation.

    Well done.

    John.
