Surfers on Inchydoney
-
cian.m.hayesParticipant
Last weekend I went home to Clonakilty for the first time in over 3 months. Here are two shots from Inchydoney on Saturday. For me they are landscapes, though I understand if some people feel they don’t belong here. All comments gratefully received. I’m delighted with how this turned out, as usual it looks a little too dark on my work monitor, but aside from that I’m really happy.
I’m also quite pleased with this one, though I’m a little worried about the green tone I added afterwards, is it too much? I didn’t want neutral black and white so I definately would like a slight sea-green cast, I just don’t want to over do it.
ExpresbroParticipantTwo really nice shots Cian. I particularly like the composition in the first. You’ve pretty much nailed that sky exposure wise. The only negative for me would be the dark foreground and the loss of detail there. A bit of fill flash would probably have helped. It was exactly the kind of thing we were discussing in Portmarnock two weeks ago.
I think the green cast is fine if that is what you were aiming for. Suits the image I think.
Cheers

GrahamBParticipantThe first shot is excellent in my book. I love the composition and the conversion is great.
The composition in the second is also very good but if I’m being honest ( which i always am )
i would have to say I’m not a fan of the green cast. I’m not sure that the shot needs it.
For me the simplicity of the second shot is it’s attaction and a minimal approach to processing
would suit it better.Thats just me though, I’m sure you will get a mixed bag of opinions on the green cast.
Great shots though :)
cian.m.hayesParticipantThanks for looking lads. I think ye both have vey valid points. On my work monitor the foreground of the first one does look quite dark but at home it was fine. It actually has plenty of detail, I manually burnt that corner because the sky was so dark, I felt the shot was becoming top heavy. Like I said, when I saw it at home it looked fine so I think I might try revisit it, try and balance things out a little.
I’m thinking the green is too heavy, I wanted a very subtle cast but I think I went overboars, I’ll tone it down whe nI get home and repost tomorrow. Thanks a million for the sanity check.

cian.m.hayesParticipantI’ve replaced the photos with minor re-edits.

I’ve edited the shots to leave the rocks essentially nayural, they are still a little darker than the when they came out of the camera. I have the raw file so I could lighten them considerably but I want to keep them dark to balance the sky.
I’ve toned down the green, there’s still a hint of it there, but I think this is closer to what I wanted.
