Sutton Rainbow

Happened to be walking close to a beach at Sutton yesterday… caught a rainbow over Ireland’s eye:

irishshaguaParticipantI think there’s three things that this image is suffering from.
The rainbow is very light and does not come through as a strong part of the picture and therefore does not hold interest in the pictures sky which there is a lot of. The clouds are not unusual or punchy and so don’t hold interest to be so overwhelming in the picture. I think you could easily get away with cropping just above where the rainbow starts to dissapear (below the blue sky).
Also the bit of beach at the bottom of the image makes it look like the horizon is off even though it looks grand when you concentrate on the island. I would crop this out as its distracting. The image is nice but it doesn’t look very sharp or eye catching as it is. I think you could return with a much stronger image if you played with it more on the post processing side. Just a thought.
Irelands eye is definitely a very photogenic island, somewhere I’ve been back to a few times and I’d say it looks lovely with the rainbow breaking over it.

Glad to see you posting. Brian – Niall isn’t a believer in post-processing =)I think the basic composition here is good, although Brian’s suggestion of a panoramic crop might work well. I would have included a little more of the tail of the island to the left, so it doesn’t run out of frame, and possibly cropping out the strip of sand along the bottom.
Here’s a quick edit to show you what’s possible with minimal postprocessing:

PetercarstenkriegerParticipantHi Niall,
I can’t agree with all points made here, sorry Peter:). The beach in the foreground isn’t bad at all – it gives some perspective to the image and I would probably have included some more (not much though). The frame a bit more to the right would have helped to include the whole island. The main problem however is that you haven’t used a polarizing filter to bring out the rainbow at its best and increase the contrast between sky and clouds (the cloud position and formation is very good).
All the best,
Carsten
