Sweetheart of a Seal

This sweet seal is swimming in the reflection of a colorfully painted fishing boat in Howth Harbour. I fell in love with her.

Fantastic shot, the ripples and reflections really make it in an abstract kinda way. Unusual.

Great job Sharon. You framed the seal and ripples perfectly. Love the colours.

I seen this dude or one of his friends a week ago out in Howth Harbour my shot was no way near as good

    Well done

Goosebanker~~~thanks! Just got lucky..all the elements were there for the unusual effect :D

Ravenash~~~I liked the colors as well..you can thank the fisherman for parking his colorful boat there..it really made for spectacular shades on the water..thanks for the compliment!

Robbie~~~thank you too…do I have to marry everything I love? anyway..what is that story about the Selkie….I am not sure it exactly has anything to do with anything…but it popped into my mind when you said that!

Martin~~~thanks to you too! She..or he..was a delightful and willing subject as you probably noticed as well!!

stcstc~~~oh those are wonderful!!! thanks for pointing out that link..somehow I missed it…well done!..now I am REALLY excited about October :D…hope I have the perfect lens by then!!!

Nice shot Sharon. Does Rob have an image of you taking this shot???? It ain’t easy to get a good image of these – they’re a bit like icebergs. 90% is always below the water…assuming they’re not on dry land

If you really want to see these babies at their best you want to do it under water. I used to do a bit of SCUBA diving and to float mid-water only feet away from one of these is an experience hard to equal. With the pocket of air around their skin they glow white and look for all the world like a floating labrador. They’re as curious about you as you are about them. Then a flick of their tail end and they’re gone. Just don’t wear a grey skin suit – it can prove difficult to resist – I kid you not!!

Alan~~~~ahhhhhh..dont you dare dare Robbie to post any shot of me..anywhere   in fact..I was just two minutes ago warning him against it!!!!
That’s a great story! It would be fantastic to have that opportunity…wow…have you got photographs??…they do seem to be quite warm to people..she certainly captured my heart..or him as it may have been….

Wow! That’s a really lovely shot. The ripples and colours really help make this stand out from a regular wildlife shot. There’s a place not far from me called shell island which I hear is covered in Seals, but I can’t get out there without a boat and they never come close to this shore, so I can dream on about ever getting a shot like this. :)

Hey Wolfy2k4~~~Thanks to you! I wasn’t sure how this photo would be received. I am glad it’s been positive!

I’d do whatever I could to get myself out there…it sounds so beautiful with or without camera. Have to look up Shell Island on the map :D

I doubt it’ll be on any map sadly. It’s just off the coast of a small island called Sheppey in the South East of Kent, England. I’m looking at chartering a fishing boat to go out there though, I’ll let you know if I have any success!
