Hi Noel,
I am dissapointed that you did not get some replies from
members experienced in this type of photography.
Unforunately I am not one of these but I thought your request
for C&C deserved a reply. When I looked at this I thought it was quite a nice selection
of food but the image didn’t really grab me.I love cooking and cookery books.
I would say if I cooked a recipe a day from the books we have
I’d have to live a couple of hundred years.
The one thing most of the books have in common is the fantastic photography. When you didn’t get a reply I tried to find out myself a bit about food photography.
I did learn that it is not easy but I did come across the statement “making it look
good enough to eat a few times” :)I wonder if you selectively focussed on one of the dishes, like that fantastic looking
bowl of olives? at the front, would you have made a more dramatic picture.Sorry for rambling on but I am trying my best.
Cheers.
John.
miki gParticipantHi Noel. I stand guilty as charged for looking at this and failing to return to comment. Food photography isn’t something I would be familiar with either, but I’ll give it a go to comment. I think the layout is too messy. It reminds me of a glutton trying to fit everything in (no offence intended). I think with less dishes this could have been a lot better. Also if there was uniformity (Is that a real word?) of the dishes/bowls/spoons to give a neater presentation. I think there are also too many colours due to the variety of dishes and I find this is distracting, as is the little plastic dish top left. The shooting viewpoint doesn’t help the layout IMO. Maybe the same setup shot from directly above could work. As I said, I don’t know about food photography and I believe that it must be one of the hardest subjects to get right, as you are not only trying to get the technical end of the photography spot on. but you also have to make the product look good and tasty enough to eat. I think in this case, it’s just too much choice.
Noel BuckleyParticipantThanks guys for talking the time to comment.
This shot was taken in a small country market in Temple Bar area. I was out with a few people from my club on a street shoot. I liked the layout of the bloes and the different foods.
I know nothing about foor only what the wife put in front of me. The shot was more about the different types of food on the stand.
Nevertheless thanks guys.
Noel.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/davemont/2922044173/..It would seem we found the same stall! :D Only I spotted it in Belfast one day.
Like your shot there, seems to be a bit blurred though, or is that just me?JMac-2006ParticipantHi Noel
Nice selection of foods there and certainly better than the plastic containers. As i scrolled down i expected one of the bowls to be in sharp focus still cant find one – i think among the ramblings there (sorry John :) ) it was mentioned the first bowl of olives would have benefited from this – still interesting shot and makes me ask where is this ?
A 1.8 or 2.8 lens would be great for this type shot – this is only my opinion – but having looked at loads of food type shots shallow depth of field / strong focal point seems to be the recurring theme along with vibrant colour and mouth watering food
the food is never on the plate long enough to try out myself so can’t speak from experience :)
