Taking pictures at a party no flash

Hi this is my first post. My name is Nuala and im looking for help. My sister is having a party after her wedding and i was thinking of taking pictures of guests and doing body switches. I could do a slideshow, anyway my first problem is I want to take pictures without flash.
What i am thinking is to set up little area inside door with a guestbook so when people sign i could get a picture. i could set up a backdrop with lights, get them to pose for one shot but then sneak in another couple maybe have something funny behind me to catch their eye. i thought if i had area lit up well enough wouldnt need flash, but i dont want umbrellas and all that just small lights thats not fussy – is it possible ???? – help pleeease. maybe im crazy this is only step one and already looking for help. thanks nuala

    Hey Nuala

First of all welcome, and good on you for your first post :)

Second, what you are after is possible.
The only thing you have to consider is whether or not the party is taking place during the day or at night. If its at night, you will need a few lights and not just one or two, if you want small ones you will need a few, in order to give proper lighting so that the image looks good.

If you take it during the day it would work out well, if you are setting up the mini backdrop inside a door you could have natural light coming through the entrance aswell as the fact that the area itself will be lit with natural lighting, the extra few small lights will help you to get the effect with the lighting you want.

It really depends on the lighting that will already be available on the day/night that will determin whether you can do the whole shoot of each person without a flash, but i would say it is possible, since your setting up an area you will have a tripod? So just set to a slow enough shutter speed and a low aperature, if its a bit hard with the lighting and you have no flash increase the ISO but be aware of grain in the image.

    I hope this helps :)

Also, if its at night time just set up your area in the section that has a few overhead lights aswell as your own small lights.
