Tallships In Waterford 2011

    Hi All,

Just an idea. Is anyone else thinking about going to see the Tallships in Waterford?

I’ve seen them in Boston and they are wonderful machines.

I will probably go to it Ted, I went the last time they were in Waterford, and it
was a great spectacle all right. End of June beginning of July? I think is the time
    it is on.

    Jenny,

The race to Scotland starts on 3July. I had a crew position on the Europa, but lost it to a younger crew member. (The Sail Training Association only allows 25% of the crew to be older than 25. :) )

    Here’s Festval Events site. http://www.waterfordtallshipsrace.ie/the-festival/

The festival runs from 30 June to 3 July. I’ll go down for at least two days.

If my small canal/river boat gets out of the workshop, I’ll being going down from Monasterevin via the Barrow. In that case, I’ll be happy to take PI folks out to shoot from the water. (Depending on the berthing arrangements, that could be better or worse than shooting across the river. The river is only 200meters wide and from land we can use tripods, while small boats can be a shaky platfrom.

Maybe someone from Waterford will speak up and suggest where we might best meet down there. And cheap hotels.

Can’t wait for the return of the Tall Ships to Waterford. It’s been on my mind for years, after really enjoying the whole weekend when they were last there in ’05.

Great weekend, if anyone is considering it/ on the fence. Several hundred thousand people in a city the size of Waterford, means the entire place is subsumed by the event, and it’s a terrific festival atmosphere.

Ted, that sounds really cool – will be keeping my fingers crossed your boat is sea-worthy! Let me be one of the first to say I would love to clamber onboard if you are down, especially if there’s some shooting to be done :) I’ve edited your original post by the way, to attach a corresponding event in the calendar for the festival.

Re: Waterford, the Quay will be the place to be and either there, or John Roberts Square will make the best meeting point, I suspect. Re: acommodation, there are a number of city centre hotels near the quay, such as the Granville, Tower, Days, Dooleys, Fitzwilton and Quality Marina hotel to name some of the main suspects. You may pay a bit for some, but the convenience of staying on the Quay will be second-to-none. Other options include Waterford Castle, the Viking Ramada, and the local Travelodge. Can’t say much about many of the hotels, having never stayed in them what with being a local and all that, but would say avoid the Travelodge which is quite dated, and not the most hygienic.

Re: B&B’s, there are a lot of B&B’s spread throughout the city, with many along the Cork Road providing a convenient, walking-distance location to the main festivities on the Quays.

Not sure, re: hostels, as the choice has been poor for quite a number of years now, but perhaps others can chime in with their feedback/ experience, if I’m off the mark here.

Looking forward to meeting up with any PI members that make it down, and extending a warm welcome, and hopefully one which involves a bit of shooting, and a few pints :)

    Damien,

I can’t promise anything about the boat quite yet. Currently she’s in West Cork having a new windscreen and cockpit canopy installed. When she comes back to her barn in Laois she’s getting a full repaint.

If all that happens in time I’ll be scooting down the Barrow from her home port in Bell Harbor, Monasterevin.

No worries Ted, I caught your drift from your post. It promises to be a great weekend, in any case :)

    Hi Guys

    Myself and a few of the buddies are heading down over the three days for the Tall Ships this year. (Bus Man’s Holiday..!!) Maybe someone might be able to answer a few questions;

I see on the current programme that they are having fireworks every night. :? :? Does anyone know what night the fireworks are actually on and where they are being launched from?

Is there any traffic restriction plan issued and who do you have to go through to get passes? i.e The Tall Ships Organisers or Waterford Council?

The best late pub in John Street area for ageing photogs.. :D :D :D

    Thanks in advance

Geoff’s, Philly Grimes (about 100 yards away in Johnstown) and Downes (Thomas Street) are three of the best. Geoff’s can get busy, but to be honest, most of the pubs in Waterford should be humming the weekend of the Tall Ships, and there’ll probably be a quite convivial street party atmosphere. T&H Doolans (on Georges St) also worth a look.

Re: fireworks, haven’t looked at schedule but imagine they will be on Saturday night, ahead of the ships leaving for Dunmore East on the morning of Sunday.

Not sure about traffic restrictions, but with the second bridge crossing into Waterford, should not imagine that you will have difficulty getting in or out of the city, although driving around the city (in particular the Quays) will likely be impeded if not completely blocked off during the weekend.

    Thanks for the info Damien

I’ve just had it confirmed that there will be fireworks every night as advertised on the website. Launch area yet to be decided.

Thanks for the info on the pubs. We’d like to find a place not full of teeny boppers!, with a good atmosphere and no hassle so that we can unwind after a hard days photography….!!!!!!

Almost have accomodation sorted with parking so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Looks perfect as a “local” pub. Seems a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle. We’ll put in our pub craw……sorry…. “Tourist Trail” :D :D :D

The other spots look good when we have the energy..

    Thanks Damien

There will be a few traffic restrictions along the quays, but almost everywhere else will be ok around the city.
