Love the second shot jb7 – the subtle tones and grain work a treat. I might like a little more room around the first, that said, there’s a lovely softness to the image that really appeals to me, very nice.
SteveDParticipantThe first shot would be my preference here. I like how the delicacy of the subject is enhanced by the soft ‘creamy’ shadows at the bottom of the photo. I’m glad you didn’t crop those out! A nice full range of tones from white to black, with darker areas helping to define the petals.
There is a spot on one of the lower petals which I would get rid of, especially as you tend to make large prints.
jb7ParticipantWow, 2 mods out of two posts,
one more for the hat-trick-Thanks for the comments, much appreciated-
This is like a test, but its such a beautiful rose,
there aren’t many as good as that here-The digital thing is wonderful,
but I’m not properly set up for macro-However, if I shoot this on film,
I know I can get something similar by using an orange filter on b/w,
and perhaps then it can go big-These are both the same pic, btw, the second is a crop-
but then again, so is the first-Thanks again-

gerardkParticipantDenverDollParticipantFor all the effort you’ve put into helping me improve my columbines, I think I’ll just give up now
jb7ParticipantThanks again-
Maybe bigger flowers are easier, DenverDoll :wink:Just try another flower and you’ll see-
just choose it carefully-j
AliParticipantjb :) Rumour has it you’re a film guru ;) I’ve been telling Rob i’m going to gradually suck all of that knowledge out of you :)
jb7ParticipantNot me Ali,
whoever it was who said that to Rob
must have been lying through their teeth…I’ve shot a fair bit of film,
mostly due to my age,
and the lack of an alternative
way back in the early days of photography-But its mostly about following the instructions,
and a bit of experience-
I don’t know anything about alt processes, or the like,
which is the least you would expect from a guru-I’ve never tried the efke,
though I remember it from way back-But I’ve been meaning to try it for a while now-
and guess what-
I’ve got a roll coming in for test this very weekend,
filtered down through Rob, of this parish. Can’t wait!
