Went on an Aimless wander through town this morning/afternoon with Ciaran and a gang of us from here and it was a great few hours of photography and banter. Thanks to everyone who came along..I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next one
Took this shot in Temple Bar Meeting Square…almost got eaten by his dog in the process, but he was much more amiable :D
(Re-edited this to adjust the colour cast…hope it’s better)
RodcunhaParticipantFantastic portrait Rob.
Too bad I couldn’t make it… it is always when you make plans that something unexpected happens, glad you took great advantage of the “tutorial” though…
Regards,
Rod
ciaranParticipantRobbie,
Glad you enjoyed today. Shot wise, I’m not overly fond of the toning. It’s a little too red for my liking. But the exposure is good and its nice and sharp. Usually if I don’t have people engage the camera directly, I prefer some emotional feel to the shot. In this one the emotiion is slightly lacking, so I think it would have benefited from catching him head on.
ExpresbroParticipantThanks Rod…I really enjoyed the day…and the company was excellent…is a pity ya couldn;t make it okay..but next time for sure right? :D
Ciaran… I agree about the eye contact…but unfortunately I didn’t get one with eye contact. The conversion was fairly rushed…so not sure it’s exactly the way I’m going to leave it…to be honest I wasn’t really sure what way I wanted to go with it..sometimes there are so many options for toning in PS that you can get lost half way through…
Anyway..thanks again for a fun and informative day..
and a special mention for Lorraine who had to put up with the rambling of all us lens toting men for the day…and still kept a smile on her face :D
shutterbugParticipantA great “weather beaten” face Robbie but agree with
Ciaran about the colour, it is worth playing around with,
I wasnt sure what it was about it but when mentioned it
has got reddish tone to it.Madra RuaParticipantWhat a great face! Pity you didn’t get the eye contact Robbie.
BTW I was driving down the Grand Canal on Saturday afternoon when I spotted two ‘nerds’ with tripods and camera bags heading towards Rathmines.
That wouldnt have been any of you gentlemen?ExpresbroParticipantNah Hauke. We didn’t get anywhere near Rathmines, and sure we were a very cool looking bunch of people altogether. Not a nerdy type amongst us….honest!!
Defo gonna have another look at this shot anyway and adjust the tone. I looked at it beside another BW portrait I did of a friend on Saturday night and it does look over reddish. I saved it as a .PSD file anyway with all the adjustment layers intact so should be easy enough.
Cheers for the comments everyone. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t learn something new on this site .
Robbie
8)GrahamBParticipantExpresbroParticipantTell ya what Graham. Nobody is ever gonna steal their takings…that little fella came at me like a Rottweiler..and I was putting money IN!!
I have a nice shot of him too actually..must process it..he looked so cute and cuddly in it. Funny how the camera can lie …

Was a good bit of craic rob, nice to meet you and the other lads.. and wandering around with my papparazzi bodyguards was great fun !!
You’ve had pretty good feedback on this … but here’s my two cent anyway. I like that you got down low to his level for the shot…. .. the lack of direct eye contact doesn’t really bother me .. but i think it definately would be worth looking at it again and changing your conversion. ..Its taking alot away from the image at the moment .. and i think there is more to be had in that shot .. i really like it :)
If you have room in the original, maybe try leave a little more space in the direction he is looking.. that way you make the most of the fact he’s not looking directly at you
Nice workL
ExpresbroParticipantOkay. Did a re-edit on this pic..I think this is probably better…least I hope so :D
LoGillParticipantExpresbroParticipantExpresbroParticipantOh btw…I checked the original..and the crop is as it is here. In my head when I was taking it I was thinking about something I read which said you should always try to fill the frame with portraits..or something like that….but I agree it might be a little better with a bit more space space on the left….
All part of the great learning curve..,.. :D
mervifwdcParticipantI presume the image at the top is the one “less red” as it looks super to me. Well done!
