The Beauty Of Rathlin Island Sea Stacks MidDay Long Exposure

A shot I took this on a camera club day out to Rathlin Island. (Antrim Camera Club)
I have waited just over 3 years to get back to shoot this particular scene, since i lost the last batch i had due to not backing up the hd and it dying.
Used 4 exposures here to get this, using a nd10 filter, total exposure time was just over 10 minutes.
Image was blended in photomatix and the levels adjusted in cs.
The image seems to have lost a fair amount of quality on the downsizing not sure what went wrong.
Any comments on this particular image most appreciated.Sea Stacks Rathlin Island with rather harse mid day light. But with that strong a shadow I just had to take this shot.
piusno1MemberTwo great shots love the movement of the sea in both, I really like the first one the most , theirs too much shadow in brh corner for my liking
in the second. Got a set of ND filters only last week, after seeing these shots I got to try them soon. great stuff.Joe
BMParticipantI think that the first is a truly remarkable image. Great detail, great colours and fascinating composition.
There will probably be some comments about the Photomatix treatment – but I think you’ve done a great job here.
DeeboParticipantGreat shots for both images
The first is great and have been looking at this for 10 minutes. Only niggle i Have is the sky looks too dark to render the light on the cliff side so maybe a be dodge to life
Cheers . Deehotjohn01ParticipantThe first shot is truly stunning, spent a good while staring at it. Nice colours and detail and i feel its a nice reminder of how cool parts of our country are especially in times of good weather.
Brian_CParticipantYip I’ll say the first one is really nice too, really strong vibrant colours and tones.
I note you say that it’s 4 blended images and a total exposure time of 10 mins, were the 4 exposures underexposed and over exposed and blended to a HDR? Or is it some other new skill. It’s a really really nice shot Gareth.
vividimagesMemberBrian thank you for your comments, to answer the question, yes it was 4 exposures under and over and blended in hdr, I had a B+W ND10 filter on which lets you get long exposures in daylight conditions, I think the longest exposure was just over 4 minutes, which brought up detail in the cliff edge on the left, without that exposure in that area was just complete darkness. I really wanted to capture the movement in the foreground grass, then bring the water to cream and have the static objects, rocks short grass and fence line jump out. Im not the best at explaining this stuff, but hope i got it right this time round.
Cheers GarethPitmaticMemberThe first for me I like the vivid grass and rocks makes me think of a Holman Hunt painting
sean1098MemberBrill set there, dont know how i missed this…….First pic is great. The movement in the foreground looks nice, on the left looks not as real, prob a mixture of long exposures and blending.. I take it this is from the different exposures.
I would have taken in a wee bit more sky, but thats just me.
Would be happy if i took this shot.
Sean.
petercoxMemberFirst shot is excellent. You’ve done a great job of blending the exposures and not overdoing the HDR effect. Nice work.
Cheers,
PeterPD_BARBSParticipantTwo excellent shots. really nice the first one, excellent job with the long expsoure. I took some shots at this exact spot on the PI trip, but this is how it should be done.
vividimagesMemberPD_Bars thanks for the comment, only thing I hate was not getting more than a few hours on the island, would love to be there early morning and evening for nicer light, but hope to camp on the island for a few days in August and hopefully then get some better images.
Cheers GarethbokehjuniorParticipantLove the shot. I would also have like to have seen a bit more sky but having said that i love what the long exposures do with the grass in the f oreground. really super shot, well done.
