The Big Question: Sensor Cleaning

Recently I noticed that dust on my sensor has become pretty bad. I always had the odd speck or two that were easily cloned out or blown of with a rocket air, but after a years use I think my 400D needs some TLC.

I have been reading into cleaning on many sites and most recommend E2 fluid from Eclipse and PecPads for the job.
Anyone have any tips or advice for me on how to get the best results with these. Would be appreciated as I’m nervous about this, but considering the amount of people who seem to do it with ease it’s clearly a widely done thing.

    Any advice appreciated,
    Thanks

It’s remarkably easy. I’ll post some details in the morning, but I use the stuff you mention and it really is dead simple.

Do you have something like a rocket blower? might be that you can just blast the dirt off, its great for cleaning lenses as well.

I bought a rocket blower which didnt get all the dirt off, so i bought some cheap digipads, i think was the name from ebay. Have yet to receive them :( so cant comment on them yet.
But ill leave a comment when i do.

Hi Folks, ‘ Just a quick note to say we Stock Eclipse products – Swabs, Fluid or full kits. Also stocked (just to add to the confusion!) are: Visible Dust brushes, Dust Aid, Speckgrabbers and GreenClean! We also have good quality Rocket / Hurricane blowers for €9.42.

Thanks John, good to know someone round here does it without any problems….this is more worrying than my Leaving Cert in 14 weeks!

Have a rocket air blower alright RaV but it’s not budgin any of this latest stuff so it’s most likely welded on stuff so wet clean in oreder.
Most people do a wet clean at least once a year by the sounds of things.

Eh thanks for that but yer late Barkers, already have the stuff ordered :)

How much are the Eclipse kits?

I need to shift some dirt too.

Are people aware that you need to turn off the camera before changing lenses?
This is probably the main reason you get dirt on the sensor.

Yeah, always trun it off when changing. Static attraction otherwise yep?
I got E2 fluid from Surreyphotography on ebay for €12.

    Not so bad,

I would like to give the sponsors of the site a twist now and again!

Cant be that much more expensive here, although it will be more expensive.

I can vouch for the cleaning kit supplied by Paddy Barker, I got it in late December and I’m very happy with results. Not 100% sure on the price.

    Evan,

Apologies for not getting back –

I bought Eclipse Fluid and Pads from the same supplier you already mentioned. Anyone thinking of doing this – just make sure you get the appropriate pad for your sensor as the pad sizes vary (1.5x, 1.6x, Full Frame etc).

The cleaning is very simple – (Read the Instructions that accompany the pads/fliud first)

Put the camera into Mirror Lock Up mode via the camera menu.

2-3 drops of fluid on the tip of the pad.

With care, run the pad across the sensor from left to right.

Turn the pad, and run back along the sensor from right to left.

    Switch off the camera.

That’s it. The main thing is that you don’t put the pad inside the camera and then start acting like a bull in a china shop.

Thanks John, hopefully all goes well so.
Just waiting on the stuff to arrive :)

My 5 ‘digipads’ and eclipse fluid arrived on friday.

The good news is that the sensor or IR filter? infront of it, is not as delicate as everyone seems to say.(atleast to justify the fear of wetcleaning, but i know some people just dont want to risk it)

The not so good news is that the ones I got are hardly high quality plus were too small for my sensor(they obviously didnt read my email). Have used all 5 and the sensors not much cleaner, talk about stubborn dirt. It says dont reuse them, and i have a few times – the odd time it did add loads of little dots all over the place though.

Poor camera, no idea how those few big stubborn particles got in there, hardly change lenses on that one. Will either reuse them 1 more, or move on too some other soft material with the eclipse fluid, have overcome my fear of damaging it anyway, which hopefully wont turn out to be a bad thing. :)

be careful wot fluid you use as the low pass filter on the sensor has a delicate coating !!!

I have yet to have to clean the sensors of either my E-520 or E-3, not because they arent being used, but because the dust removal function on them is so reliable.I have even left the E-520 sitting on purpose with no caps or lens attached, completly exposed and it had visible dust and i turned it on and it was good as new!
