I shot this yesterday when my niece’s daughter was being christened. I used a 50mm at 1.8 on my Canon 350D in a fairly dark church. The baby (Caoimhe) was being held by her grandmother and the hand on the left is the baby’s great grandmother’s. I tried adding blur to the background but it may be a bit hamfisted.

    I would welcome a critique.

Very sweet shot there Jools, pls pls say you got a shot with the three generations together?(Faces showing).. These are the kind of shots that people will never part with. Strange what you say you had to add blur, did the wide aperture not throw the back out esp considering the distance between the baby and the far wall?

Beautiful portrait there, and as already mentioned, you couldn’t but like this photograph of a moment in time captured for posterity. I really like the compostion, colour and dof. Cracker of an image!

I would agree but maybe substitute a Q for the K. I have heard it pronounced Keevah too.

Thanks for the kind comments. I think the little lady has quite an amused look though.

It is pronounced ‘Keeva’ where I am. Similar to Niamh or Naimh, pronounced ‘Neeve.’

heres a simple idea using available light in a church, and bear in mind i dont do this kind of work its just a way of using whats available to get a good candid shot.

Quite like your first shot there, beautiful light and composition IMHO, but perhaps it would be better to post it in a new thread for C & C to see what others might think. I don’t want to knock your pictures, but I sometimes think it’s a little unfair to post another image in a thread unless it demonstrates a better approach to taking the image initially posted. There haven’t been any negative responses to the first image at all yet, so I don’t think it makes sense to post another image which will provoke comparisons. I love your first shot, but I just think it should have been posted in a new thread, sorry.

I hope you don’t mind my making this point; I had no intention of being nasty or anything. Perhaps the idea of posting new images within a thread is something that could be discussed more comprehensively in a new thread in General Photography Q & A perhaps?
