The Cut

Although I have never been a smoker, I really enjoy the occasional cigar. A while back I purchased some Romeo Y Julieta Short Churchills which I can thoroughly recommend. Shot taken with my Nikon D700 and my trusty Nikkor 35mm F2.

“Does Sir prefer a straight cut or a V cut?” Interesting cutter, do I see two blades? I have a guillotine cutter, stretches out, place cigar in hole, squeeze it shut, job done. I stopped smoking cigarettes 22 years ago, but I still enjoy a cigar from time to time. Got a few nice ones in Havana a few years ago, but they don’t come any way cheap. My wife bought me a Romeo y Julietta corona in the government cigar shop in Havana at about £12-£13. There was a nice box of 3 cigars of various sizes with a cutter included in Foxes window (I think) across from TCD a few months ago priced at 80 Euro. If I’d had 80 to spare I’d have bought them! I also have the odd puff of the Shisha.
I’m not sure about the DOF in your pic Stephen, I think I’d prefer the near end of the cigar to be in focus. Maybe smoke it down an inch or two and photograph it again!

    Hi Alex,

Great to see a fellow cigar appreciator picking up on this post. The cutter is a straight two blade guillotine cutter. It just looks fancy. Normally just go for the straight cut myself!

I take your point and the DOF. The shot was taken at F2 using window light camera right. I thought the grain pattern on the table provided a really nice background for the shot and I wanted to include the fancy cutter!

I have a few more of these puppies so I might try this shot again and get more of the cigar in focus and a shot of ash would be a good idea too.

Some more smoking to be done I guess.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Hi Stephen.
Is tobacco advertising allowed?

A smaller aperture would help bring more of the cigar in focus. I’m trying to make up my mind on whether I’d prefer the cigar to be running in the same direction as the grain in the timber.
