The space to the left, whether sharp or blurred, emphasises the busy aspect of the environment in which the scene is set. Being blurred obviously bring focus to the main characters. If the featured characters were more central they would block out most of the environment and I don’t think the scene would be nearly as strong.
I love offsetting people and items within shots as I consider doing so to be an exercise in movement, as in almost forcing the observer to look more closely at the shot.
I agree with John17 that the couple would be better placed in a more central position as I feel the girl is very cramped next to the edge of the frame. Nice use of DOF with both the people in the background & the objects (CDs maybe?) in the foreground. I find the guy over the girls shoulder to be a bit distracting & the area of the sellers hair which is blending in with the highlights of the tent. That said, it’s a lovely shot with lovely tones. I don’t think a colour version would work as well.
