The Fairy trees on Christmas Eve.(new pics added)
-
niallmacParticipant
I took these shots on Christmas eve back home in Co.Roscommon, just outside Ballaghaderreen. I was going to go shopping, but my car didn’t start and the roads weren’t gritted( it was -12 when i tried to start the car, there was 3-4 inches of solid ice on the roads by Sunday evening!)and a walk down the field was much more enjoyable than shopping anyways
There are a lot of these fairy trees around the village, i think they stand out a lot better covered in frost, i’ve been waiting a few years for these shots! Apparently a man named Val Rafferty once lived beneath the tree in the second and third image, there’s no sign of his house left, it’s long before my time but my father remembers him.
Nothing but bats lived in the other tree, I used to hate going up to it late at night, checking cattle or whatever, when I was young, I used to think the fairys would get me!
C&C welcome.derrycityParticipantwesleylawMembersnaphappyMemberwirepicParticipantI really like the third one. Lovely shot indeed.
Perhaps for the first on if you got down on the ground it would separate the tree more from the hedges and put more of it against the sky. And portrait might work better to isolate the tree. Of course then lying on the ground would involve freezing your nads off which may not have been your intention when heading out :)
niallmacParticipantthanks for the comments folks. the first shot could possibly use a different angle or something, though that said I am a big fan of symmetry and i do like to disregard the old rule of thirds occasionally. maybe the lower viewpoint would have worked, but I prefer to keep my nads nice and toasty
miki gParticipantSolusMembershutterbugParticipantThey are all lovely shots, and I like the first shot because it is central :)
different strokes and all that! I love all these wintery shots not brave enough
to venture far myself and we have got away fairly light in Wicklow, plenty of
ice but not much else unless you venture up the mountains.5faytheParticipantHi Niall,
This is a lovely set of photographs and credit to you for
getting out in what looks like very cold conditions. The trees themselves look really good in all 3 with the
effect the snow/frost has had on them.
Almost like a colour infra red.
This is an occasion where a clear blue skyis very helpful.I agree that a slightly lower shooting angle in #1 might
have been better but I think the central positioning suits. All in all very good.
Well done.
John.
niallmacParticipantGORIOParticipantthe best for this set love the depth of the blues and the contrast of the white snow in there. happy new year!
5faytheParticipantHi Niall,
The 2 landscape images are not showing in full as the new site currently
only allows, I think, 800px images and crops any extra off the RHS.#1 in this new series looks good to me.
I have a couple of quibbles.
I think the converging vertical take away a little from the image and I
would be tempted to clone the intruding branches on the RHS.Nice image all the same.
Cheers.
John.
niallmacParticipantThanks Gorio and John. i guess i’m gonna have to look at resizing things for the new site.
the converging verticle was kind of necessary to fit in the bits i wanted and exclude the bits i didn’t, in this case getting in the whole tree whilst leaving out a hayshed to the left.MadeleineCalaidoWeberParticipant
