Memory cards keep getting smaller in size, higher in capacity, faster in sustained read/write speed and lower in price. What other directions will they take? Which format is most likely to predominate the professional photography market, and what will we see at Photokina 2008?……………
Nah, micro drives/hard drives are too fragile. Remember andy’s analogy of a 747 flying just off the ground.
It’ll stay solid state – ie. flash memory. If anything hard drives will be replaced with solid state memory for applications that can function with lower capacities; such as laptops.
Not sure that the hard drives, measured in Tb, will be replaced by solid state memory anytime soon.
I guess, 5 years ago, a 20Gb ipod with hard drive was pretty amazing. Already we have a 16Gb ipod with flash memory….
edit: and coming back the the applications for cameras…
The mega pixel race is slowing down (ish!), so file sizes aren’t getting much larger. Do you really want/need 2000 images on a single card? Bit risky?
I’d hazard a guess that the real future of storage lies either in nanotechnology or optical storage or possibly some combination of these technologies which are very much still in their infancy. Within 10-15 years time, the CF card we are all so familiar with today will be as rare as 3.5 inch floppies are today.
