Anyone ever see “City of God”?

This is another film I really enjoyed… no award winning acting here… but a very good story. I’m often put off watching foreign films as reading subtitles wouldn’t be for me… so I let this one sit and gather dust for months before putting it on one day out of boredom and was really quite pleasantly surprised.

Into the Wild is my favorite film of last year. Its a true story of a guy who avoids college to become a bum and ends up in Alaska – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/

The Departed was a close second and The Prestige a close third.

    Also noteworthy from 2007

The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
    The Brave One
    Knocked Up
    The Last King of Scotland
Letters from Iwo Jima (and its twin film Flags of our Fathers)
    Michael Clayton
Sherie Baby (harrowing film but really good)
    Zodiac
    Death Proof

So far this year these are worth a gawk

Cloverfield (I really liked this one)
    Die Hard 4
    Indiana Jones

Richie if you enjoy foreign films look out for “The Lives Of Others ” absolutely brilliant . Have another one called “Days Of Glory” but not got much time to watch it yet.

Yeah mate I seen that too and agree… a fantastic film….!

Mick… be prepared for that one… a toughie but really excellent…. really nicely filmed.

Podge…. Thats a good list there… except for Death Proof… I thought it was terrible and was expecting a lot…!

Hardest film I ever sat through was Irréversible, nothing else has come close in terms of stomach churning violence.
Not that there’s a lot of it, but what there is is quite brutal and unflinching in it’s depiction.

Was disappointed in The Brave One (by the numbers), The Departed (a direct copy of Infernal Affairs which I’d seen years ago), The Prestige (why) and Michael Clayton (nowhere near as good as Syriana), Die Hard 4 (yawn), Eastern Promises (so so). Really enjoyed Zodiac, Last King of Scotland, Letters from Iwo Jima and Death Proof. I thought the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Whatsisname was terrific too and the Bourne films are a blast. Best chick flick: Devil Wears Prada.

Oh Mick..made me start thinking about chick flicks….I can never get into chick lit at all..it just does nothing for me….but I do love a good chick flick….

I havent seen one that thrilled me lately…but the good ones stay in my head forever~~~

    In fact…

Thelma and Louise~~~just may be the best movie ever.

    Sense and Sensibility~~~is beautiful.

    There’s something about Mary~~classic.

    Bend it Like Beckham~~~adorable.

    When Harry Met Sally~~~just class.

    Oh, and a heads up on the latest films;

    Prince Caspian – Legendary
Hancock – Worth it if you like Will Smith, funny as hell.
Prom Night – 3 words; ha fucking ha.
    Teeth – Just DONT!
Mammia Mia – What a chick flick but pretty good by all accounts.
Priceless – Ehm, people seem to not realise that it’s a FRENCH film, but it is good if you’re bothered reading subtitles!

Recent fillums wot I have saw like:

Indiana Jones and the thingummy: absolutely average. Action romp, daft plot, nice sequences, but doesn’t gel.

Iron Man: The opening hour is simply superb, the rest you can see coming a mile off, but well worth seeing.

The Happening: Just not involving, however some disturbingly well shot scenes. Couldn’t get into the characters though.

    A few older ones

No country for aul fellas: Brilliant. But then it just stops. i must be the old fashioned sort, you know, wanting a start middle and ENDING?!!! Or maybe i missed it.

Crash: Watch this one, its superb. (not the controvertial Kronenberg version)

I am legend: Watchable, but not earth shattering, well shot, lovely dog.

    The departed: Watch this.

Saw: The original only, ignore all the sequels.

300: The missus loved it. So did I. Stylish, violent, lots of shouting and a good scrap.

Little miss sunshine: Quirky, but you’ll be glad you watched it.

Sin City: A little violent, but one word. Alba.

Is it just me or are films getting less memorable?

i have gone all dark with my choice of films lately:

The Ruins – seemed like your run of the mill teenage horror flick but had some great ideas and elements to it and great charcter development. Also beautiful cinematography, accually really surprised considering my initial thoughts of the film. Oh and some proper sqeamish gory stuff in it too.

Teeth – Considering the subject matter, I thought the story was told great. It could easily of been something from the 70’s soft porn B-movie era (not that i know any) but his film delivered great laughs and an important lesson to us all, which made me entertained and weary.

REC – Indie Spanish movie. I dont think i should discuss this film if any one wants to see it. I knew nothing about it only that it is going to be remade into an american version. Although I will say that once i watched this film it stayed with me, dont wait for the american crappy version.

    Watched a few DVDs recently…

The Bucket List – Very enjoyable, simple story, highly recommended.
    Grade B

Vantage Point – OK… worth watching if there’s now’t on the telly and the missus has a headache. Not a bad plot, slightly predictable… but passable.
    Grade C

Rambo (The Latest Installment) – I was enjoying seeing John Rambo back in action… corny and thin as the story line was… gazillions of bullets and Burmese Cowboys being sent to Hell… then after about 70 minutes it was over… and I realized it was pure shít… Stallone squeezing every last penny out of previous roles. Really poor story and a bad way to finish out the character… same as the final Rocky installment… crap.
    Grade D-

In Bruges – Well… as bad as Rambo was at least I managed to watch it from start to finish. This got turned off after about 25 minutes… dreadful… Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson ponceing around Bruge for no particular reason swearing like it’s all us Irish people ever do. I think it was supposed to be a comedy… but I never laughed once or even thought to myself “that’s funny”. Maybe it got better further into the film… but it didn’t make it far enough for me to find out. Dreadful.

Loved ‘Crash’, ‘Last King of Scotland’, ‘Shooting Dogs’, ‘Little Miss Sunshine’…

Foreign offerings constitute some of my all time favourites; ‘Nikita’, absolute classic
that some idiot in Hollywood turned into a ball of shite with a remake called ‘The Assassin’,
‘A Very Long Engagement’ and the charming and quirky ‘Amelie’. Also Robero Begnini’s
‘Life is Beautiful’. ”Jean de Florette’ and ‘Manon des Sources’ are worth a watch, as is
    Almodóvar’s ‘All About my Mother’…

All time favourite movies? Difficult to decide between ‘As Good as it Gets’, ‘Tombstone’,
‘Glengarry Glenross’, ‘The Sunshine Boys’ and ‘Scent of a Woman’. To my shame, I’m
also a huge fan of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ and ‘My Fair Lady’…

City of God is one of my favourite movies ever. I went to see it in the cinema when it came out, just tagging along with mates, didn’t realise it was going to be in subtitles myself. But I’ve watched it a few times now (bought a copy) and to this day, when I think about the movie, I don’t remember it in subtitles. In my brain its like it was in English. If a story is good enough and filmed well enough I think the subtitles aspect becomes irrelivant.

I haven’t been to the flicks in ages… but here’s a few random films I like… In no particular order…

    The Motorcycle Diaries
    Donnie Darko
    The 40 Year Old Virgin
    Good Will Hunting
    Blood Diamond
    Catch Me If You Can
    Walk The Line
    Into The West
    The Dish
    Stranger Than Fiction
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
    ET
    From Dusk Till Dawn
Darby O Gill and The Little People
    Intermission
    Point Break
    Backbeat
    The Run Of The Country
    The Usual Suspects
    Zoolander

I also like a film that had Cameron Diaz in it but I can never remember the name of it… Something to do with her trying to stop the one she loves from getting married, but it’s funny because of one of her friends who is dating some bloke and they are always at it and it just made me laugh.

The only good thing about “In Bruge” was I got a free copy of “Intermission”.. the only downer.. I already had a free copy.

“Intermission” is very good… Irish too. Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
