hey snaphappy, good first attempt at landscape.
For composition, I prefer the second shot, you have a nice bit of foreground in the shot which gives good depth to the image.
You have however lost a bit of detail in the sky on the left hand side. I think i would have positioned the horizon a third down the image. Not an excellent landscape but a great start. Keep it up :)andy mcinroyParticipantHi snaphappy,
I’ll critique on the first because I feel that it is the better of the two images. Compositionally they are both quite weak but I would give the first shot the edge for the better lighting.
I can see that you have captured some beautiful light here. It’s just a shame that the sunlight doesn’t extend just a little more into the valley. The mountain tops are quite spectacular. Was this shot taken in the highlands of Scotland?
I would call this image a “view shot”. By this I mean that there is no foregound or midground. This is the type of image that you see on postcards and they always suffer from one major problem, there is no feeling of depth and thus it is hard to be drawn into the photograph. But never fear, even images by the masters like Ansel Adams suffered from this sort of problem (look at his view shots of Yosemite, although perhaps you can get away it in the maginificance of Yosemite). I personally find it hard to wander around and interact with images like this.
Overall I would say that the top half of the image is quite super with regard to the light but it is let down and dominated by the dark , uninteresting valley.
Hope this helps
Andy
