The Letter

Taken at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC. I became fascinated with the letter sticking out of her pocket. Was it something she was about to post home maybe or post she had just received from Ireland? I’ll never know!

    Hi Tommie,

Well spotted, puts the shot into perspective.

I like the way the perspective leads to the woman’s head. Really makes it a good focal point. Perhaps the guy’s shirt and the piece of paper she’s holding could be darkened down a bit just to stop them distracting from her face.

Forget the letter, the portrait is superb! Great shot.

    Very nice portrait,
it would be a bit better not to have the guy in the background as he is a bit distracting and from a different era.
But it’s not a big negative because with the shallow DoF she pops out well from the background,
and the moment you caught, fingers in mouth, is just great.

    It’s a great shot Covey!
    Have you tried horizontal flip?

Thanks all. Not much I could do about the people in the Background I’m afraid.

I had to look up what horizontal flip was :D Don’t think it adds anything here but it did make a difference to a couple of other shots, thanks.

She is classic street photography stuff. I agree that if the guy in the background wasnt there it would be better
but that said its still a strong subject and that letter is great.

“rub out that guy” ..yeah! Should we photograph on the street or manipulate what’s there ?
