The Limpet Pool

andy mcinroyParticipant
This is one from my 2006 porfolio “Inishowen Granite”. This was an excercise in convicing myself that landscapes don’t always need “good” light.
Some of you may have seen it already as part of the set but I think it works quite well as a stand alone image.
What do you think of the little rock “egg” in the foreground. Quite cute? But then I have a thing about rocks
It’s the kind that you could cuddle up to on a cold winters night.

FlipflipParticipantSorry Andy, this one isnt doing it for me. Its just a bit flat(sorry to kill your idea of the good light! haha).
Maybe its just me but the subject matter is a bit boring I think.
andy mcinroyParticipantneilmcshaneParticipantAndy,
I have a problem with the sky in the top right. Dead space. Think a crop might help? Would this go along with set?
Regards
KPMParticipantPersonally I don’t think a crop would work as the bit of sky adds a certain symmetry to the reflections in the pool. If the sky was cropped out I would find the pool reflection a distraction, and would take away the balance of the pic.
Having said that, overall the picture doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Definately would work better in a set, or perhaps a triptych.

FlipflipParticipantYeah after looking at the set it makes a huge difference, however I still felt that this was the weakest image from that set!
Sorry, its just not doing it for me!!!!

I never was certain about this set of pics. I agree that this is at the weaker end of the set and that some of the others are very nice in an arty sort of way.
I also have a distinct suspicion that it needs an anti-clockwise rotation as evidenced by the clouds, sliver of hill, reflections in the pool and the edge of the far pool. If you say the spirit level was attached and it never lies, well, I suppose I’d have to believe you.
andy mcinroyParticipantThanks guys,
You’re all hard markers.
After that, I had to go out and indulge in some retail therapy to make me feel better.Just got myself a Pentax K10D. Feeling grand again.

John DunneParticipantMarkusParticipantHi Andy,
First of all I admire your idea and effort to even try to bring it to a good image without the right light!!!!
But… I think you learned your lesson. I’m not saying it does not work .. it just does not work in this shot.I agree with the crop, not only because it is an empty sky, more because your horizon is slightly off …(thats only my obsession)If you go for the crazy thought of “no” light you maybe should have faded it out a bit more to give it this certain “monoton” and “stony” look…(??)
Just an idea…
With Regards,
Markus
