The moment the rubber burst

Filled a balloon with water and yellow food colouring and then hung it up and fired off rapid shots with a cable release whilst sticking it with a pin sellotaped to a stick (high tech stuff) :)

Removed the stick with content aware tool. I saw this shot posted by someone else though they did not use food colouring. I added the colouring as I thought it would look better. Comments and critiques welcome. I intend doing this again with backdrops rather than just the wall used here.

lol done this myself last week but in the house :)
i think the background and pov don’t work for this shot, u don’t really get the sense of the balloon exploding. try holding it from the top and away from the wall. nice idea thinking of food colouring :)

if you want to see my attempt:

Hi Mark, great idea with the food colouring, I think this was probably the second or third shot
in the sequence as all remnants of the balloon are not visible? Not as easy as it looks is it! :)

    Claudio…..you did it indoors

Yeah, Indoors Claudio…..you are obviously not married :)

Jenny, I went through about 10 Balloons yesterday. In none of them did I capture the shape of the water along with remnants of the balloon, it was either 1 or the other. I was shooting at about 1/2000 and f3.5. Next time I might try and pus the ISO up and try shooting at about 1/4000 and see if it makes a difference.

One thing I did learn was that you get better results if you burst the balloon from the top rather than the bottom (took about 4 balloons to learns that one) :)

Also yellow food colouring is the most difficult one to remove from your skin (and I tried red and blue too). I look like I smoke 40 a day and have nicotine stained fingers today :)

Watch this space for more attempts

firing before bursting, but it is all down to luck, I think I
used about four balloons, tried one with flour in….lol wasnt a
great result….just a cloud of flour

I hope you don’t mind Mark but here’s my attempt, definitely will have another go when the weather improves. Shutter speed 1600, ISO 1600 and f2.2.

Oh and about 10 balloons killed in the making of this and one very happy 2 year old.
