Kauto Star, the 2007 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, had an easy win at today’s Down Royal Festival of Racing…
Jockey Ruby Walsh glances back at the other runners as Kauto Star crosses the finish line eleven lengths clear in the main race of the day…
BallymanParticipantLove the second shot. Were you on the track? Were you working there?
I’m over to Cheltenham in two weeks. Go every year but never took the camera until this year.
lousyParticipantReally like these two shots and you’ve captured that ‘glance’ perfect.

elludeParticipantThanks for taking time to reply :)
I liked the ‘glance’ back myself, although I always wonder if a picture like that works well when the jockey’s face isn’t visible. A few moments later he looked back to the front, but by this stage he was too close to get much of Kauto Star in the frame….
I also got a pic of the jockey (Ruby Walsh) in the paddock…
Earlier this evening I heard a discussion on the radio where they were describing Kauto Star as the world’s most famous steeple-chaser, and there’s no doubt he ran superbly at the weekend. Here is a pic with his stable hand (Nick Child)…
At Down Royal it’s possible to get really close to the track simply by leaning over the fence. I actually heard someone mention that they had once got clobbered by a loose stirrup on a horse galloping by! You can see some people close to the rail in this pic….
Another good thing about a day out at Down Royal is the chance to photograph some of the race-goers. I will post some pics of them in the people section.
lousyParticipantmaxParticipantGreat Action shot’s,never been to a horse meeting before!! But after seeing these must give it a go ?? Well done !!
ExpresbroParticipantLove the portrait of Ruby Walsh..detail is brilliant..like the little bits of muck on his helmet.
Horse racing is not my thing personally, but I’ve seen some great people shots come from these events..:-)

8)whyulittleMemberDeeboParticipantQuality shots. What lens you use, would be interesting to see if the 200 or 300 mm would get you these
Love the glance shots.
