The Old Curiosity Shop

This is probably the oldest shop front in Clonmel, no longer in use as a shop anyway, but a beautiful shopfront, and sadly year by year falling victim to late night vandalism.
This pic was taken at 6am under street lighting only. The light within the shop is natural which adds to the curiosity…

    Hi Mike.
The natural light works great in this shot to give the impression of the shop being occupied. The perspective distortion sort of ruins it for me, but can probably be corrected in PP. Maybe getting in a bit closer to exclude most of the pavement would make the shopfront more dominant. I’m torn as to whether I’d exclude the doors too, mainly due to the similiar colours throughout the whole shot & the character of the doors themselves. I was often tempted to photograph this shopfront too when I worked in Clonmel, but never got around to doing it. Have you tried a B&W version? I think it would work very well in B&W.

Great lighting in this shot, very well captured! Agree with Miki that a bit of a crop on the pavement might do good and make the shop stand out more. Also a slight crop from the left hand side, perhaps?
I don’t mind the similar colours throughout the picture, think it works well and the light from the shop is a nice contrast to it. Also, the fact that I like the tones in this so much might be influenced by me really liking sepia.. nevertheless, brilliant light you’ve captured, in my opinion, sharp and warm :)

    thanks folks for your comments.
I knew as soon as I posted the first image that it was the wrong one…
This one works best for me, it looks good in B&W but like Vee I prefer the sepia tones

definitely agree that the second one is better, you can see a bit more of whats going on in the window… in the first i couldn’t really make out what you meant about the vandalism or get too much of an idea of what was i the window… would be nice maybe to see a few closeups as well…

looks like a really interesting building, would be really cool to get a look inside  would be impossible to tell that the light from within was natural if you didn’t say it, it gives a really interesting and slightly eerie quality…

Yes, like the second one more. Perspective is better and more symmetric to make the shop itself stand out more.

Not to sound too rude now but I think you’ve overdone the tones :/ Thought for a while how to explain it but I can’t put my finger on it even..doesn’t look that sepia to me anymore. Think it rather looks..red hue?

Sorry if this comes across as plain complaining, I think the shot has improved much already, just nitpicking :)

Did a print of this in B&W today and it came out very well.
Vee…try as I might, I couldn’t replicate the tones to the same finish as the previous image and I prefer those too. It could be that I am not very skillful in processing as I tend to do very little…doesn’t sound complaining! :)
Isabella…found out today that the owner still lives over the shop and is quite cranky, just as well I was there at 6am!

    Hi Mike.
The second shot is a lot better, but I also prefer the tones from the first shot.

Great image, but super-super subject! I’m happy that everytime I come back to visit this forum, there’s one image that makes me post a commment once in a while. In this case it is your image, Mike. All the above suggestions are true, better that you corrected the perspective, maybe it’ll look better B&W and definitely less red sepia. But the image overall has a great potential. Love it!
