The point of no return

LucParticipantJay KingParticipant
I like the way you can’t really make it out… but you know what’s happening. The tear / running makeup and the title really confirm what you are seeing.
The contrast is strong… white and black – life and death. The eyes looking away work well too… the desperation and fear showing through.
Very strong alright.
LucParticipantThank you for your comments, Jay!
I am quite disappointed to have so few comments. I really thought that this kind of subject would bring more…
I was even afraid that some would react “violently”…richiehatchMemberI am not really into portraiture but I like the composition and conversion of this image. I am distracted by the softness of the overall image…. Are the eyes sharp in the original image…? Maybe its a style thing…! Also maybe its just me but it took me ages to figure out what was happening with the arm….! Now that I have figured it out I understand the image better…! I can see why ye might have expected a ‘violent’ reaction. The subject matter is a bit risky…!
Richie
PeteTheBlokeMemberLuc. I’ve just found this. What a scary photo.
You have managed to capture the utter desolation without being
crudely obvious about it. Heavens knows what you took this photo
for – I hope it wasn’t for fun. I imagine some sort of commissioned job?
It’ll haunt me. I am appalled and, simultaneously, very impressed.jb7ParticipantI’ve just figured out what it represents-
helped in no small part by the obvious retouching of the strap-It looks like a staged shot;
it seems too fetish and chic to be a documentary picture-
almost a fashion shot really-And as such,
its difficult for me to find it shocking-Though as usual,
I’m probably wrong-Good attention to detail;
perhaps if it were to be seen in some form of context, then
the retouching might not be altogether necessary-
and a little more depth of field might have obviated it too-Striking shot-

Alan RossiterParticipantI thought it was just me but I agree with Joseph. It isn’t shocking. Thought provoking, yes but it’s too staged for the shock factor.
I’ve been here several times as it is a well framed shot, great influential finishing and a lot of thought went into the creation. It isn’t my forte though so I can’t critique like most others could.
But yeah, interesting, not shocking.
Alan.
rmMemberAs an image it’s trying a bit to hard for my liking. A bit ’emo’ you might say. What is it about? The desperation and desolation of a hard core drugs habit? … or an S&M sex fetish? … or of contemplating suicide? … or of the baby doll presure put on young women?
As for a reaction? A sickening sence of realisation followed by a desire to tell some one to ‘get a grip’ followed by confusion as the other posablities came to mind.
LucParticipantMany thanks for the comments, they are appreciated.
Richie, the original is on a BW film and the light was pretty bad. That can explain the softness.
Joseph, I do not understand where you see a strap?
She is holding a knife, and I did not do any processing.
