The Portballintrae Series

I always seem to produce individual images, rather than a collection from any one particular place. So, here is a mini-series I have put together!

Do they work well together, or stronger as individual images?

    Feedback very welcome:

Both! They work very well together and as individual shots, nos two and three are stunning. The angle and perspective of shot one is peculiar to me and I’m not quite sure why I like it. At this size, I’m not really certain of what I’m seeing. All in all though, I think it’s a fantastic set. I’m sure Bertie Wooster with his passion for boats will have a complimentary word or two.

I really like them all Steve, both individually as Rob says, and as a series – perhaps stronger as a series given they’re all treated the same way. I particularly like the lines of the first, the angle of the second and the simplicity (in the best possible way) of the third.

Only thing I would say looking at them again is, for the first image, there’s a little too much of the rope (esp up the left hand side of the pic at the bottom of the frame). If you got rid of the rope to the left of the metal ring (there’s probably a technical term for it?!) and perhaps below it as well, it would make for a cleaner composition perhaps?

The rope in the 3rd is perfect though :-)

Love the vignetting and the tones of all three as well, would like to see them all larger. On the wall. Together :-)

Spank me with sushi, they’re really great!!!
They’re all terrific, but the third is my fav cos of its spot on framing.
    Wonderful stuff.

Stephen, fantastic shots. In particular I like the composition of “The Lobster Pots”. I would have to agree with Dave about the ropes on the first shot but it doesnt stop me from liking it all the same.

I’m sure they will Steve :D

You’ll have to share you post-processing tricks, I’m jealous :D

Here are a few more from that day. I will talk more about the post-processing later! Actually, all I did in PS was sharpen and add the border. The rest was done in a Raw conversion program.

Feedback welcome, but I don’t like these as much as the first three! Thanks for the kind comments so far!

Hey Steve, more good work :-) Looking forward to laying some of these up in the book for sure ;-)

End of The Day – quite peaceful, empty… undecided at the moment whether I like it for that, or not… is it empty in a good way? Hmmm… I think it would work better as part of a series than it would on its own, perhaps with other pictures offering some kind of context to it?

Portballinatrae Harbour – almost too bright for my liking, certainly when viewed alongside the others you’ve posted. No real focal point (is that a bad thing? am I wrong?!)

The Forgotten Tractor – I want to like it, but nothing about the image says ‘forgotten’ to me. More ‘dirty and possibly abandoned’ (sorry!) Perhaps you’re trying to load too much emotion onto something which I just can’t attach any emotion to, not having grown up on or near a farm, etc… so perhaps it’s just me that can’t appreciate the sentiment in that one!

I think the latter is the closest in terms of tone/style to the first 3… but for me, they do all pale slightly in comparison to the first set.

No offence and all that, they’re all beyond anything I could (or have yet to) produce!

Now stop giving everyone such tasty previews and get working on your submissions for the book… ;-)

Really like the PP technique you’ve used. I love the Lobster Pots shot.
