The Rag n’ Bone Man

nfl-fanParticipant
Wonka put me in touch with a bloke who was selling a load of (mainly film) gear whom I met up with today.
God… I nearly died when I seen all the boxes of stuff he wanted to move in one transaction.
There must be at least 100 rolls of film in there… some slide, some standard (35mm & 120), a lot expired. JTS I can hear you calling.
3 photo frames… pretty decent ones too… would cost about €20 ea in the shops.
A load of darkroom paper, about 5,6 maybe 7 boxes, in various sizes. Someday it might be used… if I go that route.
About 4 canisters of bulk film and a bulk loader (The Devil can take me straight to hell if I ever decide to try that out).
Some 4×5 film.
Some Polaroid film.
Some Lith things? Something to do with removing the greys and leaving only blacks and whites?
A load of Developer (powder), like at least 10 boxes. Some making up to 2 litres of the stuff… I think.
A Development Tank. Saves me €20 buying another as I had planned.
2 Tungsten Studio lights… you gotta see these… they are definetley older than me.
A load of slide film gadgets and things, I doubt I’ll ever use ’em.
A Euro Master exposure meter, original case, invercone and original packaging (one of these was going for £70 on eBay recently although I doubt they are that expensive)
Magazines… old, retro stuff. Oh God, enough to start a good bonfire which is where the will end up.
Books… could be a few keepers in there.
A Dark Room easel… bit shabby looking this.
The ugliest brown, yes that’s right brown, backdrop I ever seen in my life.
Two dark room light things… not sure if there’s any bulbs in them. Look old n’ shabby.
A load of other odds and ends.
Yer man flogging the gear was in his 60s, a lovely fella. He took so much time explaining everything to me (circa 40 mins) I could hardly say “thanks but I’m not interested”, plus all the developer, film & exposure meter alone justified the cost, so I too the lot. Don’t ask how much… let’s just say a lowly 3 figure sum… OK, OK… €250 notes… no idea if that’s good, bad or just plain ugly but if I get to use at least 60 rolls of that film then it’ll be a good start.
1st plan of action is to go through all the film, seperate the good (120/35mm) from the bad and starting using it. Then figure out the developer powder stuff. The studio lights, whilst archaic, work so no harm giving them a lash, beats forking out €500 for a new pair and using them twice.
God help me…
jessthespringerParticipantCool… That’s a lot of stuff… Nice find.
So, em… are you going to keep the paper? If there was any fiber based stuff, I would be interested…
nfl-fanParticipantLet me have a look over the weekend.
I’ll figure out what’s what and send you on anything that might be of interest thats of no immediate use to me.
I’ll nip out to the car now and just do a quick scan, and see if I notice anything that says “Fibre” based.
J
nfl-fanParticipantI just checked the main thing of paper… all Ilford, varying sizes, didn’t notice anything that said “Fibre” or “Fibre based” to be honest. I know there’s some more in another box that I’ll check.
aoluainParticipantnfl-fanParticipantWell… to be honest I’m certainly not the best qualified to say so… although there are quite a few things that should justify the cost.
aoluainParticipantyea and if you get a cupla-quid
fro the stuff you dont want it makes even better !!nice one. keep us posted . . . very interesting read even in
the initial post.I bought an OLD CAMERA SYSTEM a while back from
someone selling off their old gear [CANON FD]. It was such
a buzz going through the bag and the little pockets in it.nfl-fanParticipantJust found 22 rolls of 120 Kodak Portra 400NC dated 2001 in one of the other boxes.
aoluainParticipantjessthespringerParticipantrandomwayMemberSinead, next time you are in Dublin, give me a shout… I don’t see myself using the 8×10 MG fibre paper I have. Two pints of the black stuff and it’s yours, around 60-70 sheets.
jessthespringerParticipantrandomwayMemberPhotograms? = RC paper.
(By the way, brilliant find, John, well done! Sorry for hijacking your thread.)
nfl-fanParticipantNo fibre based stuff… at least nothing strikes me as being fibre based.
The film… some of it dates back to the 1980s… would this still be usable? A lot of 35mm C41 stuff so I guess I can run off a roll and drop it into the local chemist and see what happens.
J
randomwayMemberThe films should be OK, if you use Photoshop to process the pictures. If you won’t use Photoshop, than you will be too much of a purist and rebel and you will face banning from PI.
