The Road

The line is too dominent in my opinion. It’s almost cutting through the image & doing nothing for it.
I would have taken the line in the centre of the road, much like the album cover of The Eagles Greatest Hits Album. Are people afraid to get lower to the ground when taking images?
RodcunhaParticipantI think it looks fantastic! I’d have it in large in my living room no problem!
Great job there.
insertnamehereParticipantWow, big scenery! I think this is a great photo too, and I think the line works quite well. Lovely B&W conversion.
Where is it?
Mark.
aoluainParticipantwow super contrast, super image.
i would remove the bottom half of the image to make a 2:1 format image.
texMemberPretty powerful shot of the mountains and sky so like ‘aoluaim’ I would be inclined to crop out a fair amount of the road, say from where the right hand side of the road leaves the photo.
MurchuParticipantAs presented, I personally find the image a little unnatural, which I think is mainly to do with my eye not expecting to find such contrast, detail and brightness in the mountains and sky. At least thats what my initial reaction tells me. I would tend to agree with the previous comments about cropping out the bottom half of the image, from say just beneath the pole in the image. Such a crop would make the image fit a lot better for me, for lack of a better way to put it. If keeping the crop as presented, I would be inclined to tone down the processing in the background and mountains, which I feel to be a little over the top and disconcerting for my eye.
In any case, just my 2 cents :)
sirvadMemberwhen people view an image they seem to always want to crop it this way or that, view it higher or lower or do something different to what the photographer has done. This is a lovely image as is, and the mountains and sky is just delightful. id like to see the colour version although id guess the mono wub be better.crop it??? as said up to where the right corner leaves the image would work, but not necessarily better IMO. well done !
orionParticipantHi Thanks for the comments, this picture was taken on the road from Lone Pine in California into Death Valley, looking back maybe if I got closer to the road I could have got more sky into the picture. Placing the road in the middle I feel would cut out the left hand side of the picture due to the curve of the road. Here is the picture with suggested crop, Im not overly taken with it.
The Road 2 by Emmet & Kathy, on Flickrmarkst33ParticipantThe best advice I have ever heard, is “All that matters at the end of the day is if you like the image, then no one elses opinion matters” Its always interesting to hear what others think and its why we join sites like this. But the number of different opinions, crops and angles which have been suggested just goes to show how valid that advice I was given is.

texMemberI feel that you have cropped out far too much of the road in this shot. My suggestion was to crop the road from where it exits the picture area on the RHS.
You are free to reject any advice offered to you on a site like this. I think it’s nice to have people make an effort to reply to your photo even if you don’t agree with them. It’s sad to see photos pass by without any comment but with plenty of viewings.aoluainParticipanti agree with tex – you cropped out too much road,
you can afford to loose a small bit from the top of the image to keep that 2:1 formatBrian_CParticipantWoooow, the clarity and contrast in this shot is just superb. Love it!! Could you tell us a little about the technical side of the shot, have you used a Polarizer and is there a signature use of Nik Software here.
As regards the cropping and composition, I think there’s too much road in the first one but too little in the second. IMHO I’d have cropped just above the two dots in the road in the first shot, but that’s just me, as Mark said as long as you’re happy with the shot….. I’d seriously consider, printing it BIG and hanging on your wall.donalglackinParticipantfantastic shot, looks like a great location, would agree with everyones comments about the crop i think just below the first white road marking would be spot on. i think the large area of black road in the first image kinda takes away from the mountains. still a fantastic shot though, good work.
orionParticipant:oops: I completely misunderstood the cropping sugestions, I appreciate all your comments and your patience  ok this should be more like the crop that was sugested.
The Road 3 by Emmet & Kathy, on FlickrI tend to agree that this crop improves the picture.Brian_C wrote:

It was processed in Lightroom 4 and converted using the lightroom converter, I used the clarity tool to increase the clarity of all the picture, although looking back I could have been more selective with the mountains.
