The ‘Storybook Wolf’ fiasco was on my mind when I uploaded this one last night. The wolf in the controversial shot turned out not to be wild but a trained performing animal, the portal tomb (dolmen) in this pic is also ‘domesticated’ in a way, being cemented to the spot rather unsympatheticaly, you can’t see in this pic the concrete struts inside that prevent it from collapsing either. On the other hand though, I like how the moss and undergrowth now claims the concrete around the base, I don’t get to take my daughter to as many old sites as I would want to so this one is a little precious!
The ‘Dolmen’ is at Gaulstown, Co. Waterford, and dates back to the Neolithic or new stone age, 4-5,000 years ago. I dont think this one was in even in danger of collapsing when the restoration works were carried out in the 1940’s I think.
