Thinking of going medium format… any advice :)

    Hey all,

pick your brains if I may ;) I am very interested in going to digital medium format, in the very very distant future, since I doubt very much I’ll win the lotto any time soon!

Basically, I’ve done a little bit of looking, but I’m just a bit confused by all the brands out there – has anyone any advice/tips/experiences? :) I’m open to anything being told to me at this stage, as it’s something that interets me but isn’t going to be an issue for a very very long time yet…

I think, the first question could be, do you really need medium format?

 Probably not – but then, I don’t really *need* anything in life – I would very much like medium format, from the reading I’ve done and the pictures I’ve seen. I am very interested in getting into portraiture, and possibly fashion photography, so I think it would be an investment :)

Well, I am not an expert by any means, but… If I was you, I would buy a good portrait lens, lighting kit, etc. for my existing 35mm camera to get better portraits or pay for a stylist, hairdresser, models etc to get better fashion photos… the medium you use in the end is not overly important… not if you are not getting paid for the images anyway.

Have a look at the People and Fashion sections here on PI, some of the ladies/guys are producing stunning images with 35mm cameras:

Or look through this site if you have too much time, there’s a lot of fashion photography in the gallery:

There are so many options available….
Two questions to help narrow down your options:

How much do you want to spend? Remember you might need to buy a scanner so factor this in…also a hand held light meter….
Do you want a TLR or an SLR MF camera?

    A digital TLR?

    What’s that then?

Thanks for those links, I will read and enjoy! :)

As I said, it’s going to be a very very long time anyway – and budget probably aruond €15k tops I would think… I don’t even know if I’ll ever get to that to be honest, but I’d like to know my options if I do.

I’d want to go single lens probably – better the devil you know, and I have only used twin lens once or twice

Why would I need a scanner? :) That’s not something I’d thought of.

I think a scanner was mentioned because it was assumed that you might be doing film MF and then scanning the negative.
Digitial MF is ridiculously expensive, but you have a 15k budget…..
I’d guess there won’t be many people on here who would have the experience with digital MF cameras.

I saw one once in a shop, a few hundred dollars if I remember. They seem to go for about 500 on ebay.
Yes you know you want one. They do Leica too!

Ok my understanding of MF Digital is that is used primarily my Pro Fashion
shooters, and is very expensive kit.

You would be looking at probable getting a DIGITAL BACK for a MF camera

There is a lot of info here . . .

Thanks – I’d not seen that link before, so will be good reading :)

I was aware that I’d probably need a digital back :) I was just wondering what brands would be best… I was doing a bit of hunting about, and the two best seem to be Leaf and Phase One – but are they even available here (or UK)? are there any others that are as good/better?

The camera I was considering was something from the Mamiya RZ67 range… not sure if these are very good? I’ve seen some stuff taken with them by someone on Deviant Art – and was very very impressed indeed. Also this looked good: http://www.mamiya.com/mamiya-645zdb.html – again, not sure if this can be bought here or UK.

As I say – this really is all a bit premature, as those of you who’ve met me know full well – I am in no position to buy one for a very long time – but if I actually have a goal, I will save for it! whereas with no goal it sort of … slips away. :)
