Interested in your thoughts on the processing of these shots below, over processed??

The first stands out for me, as good as any shot you’ll see in any publication. Curious to know what the lighting and processing was from a portrait numpty point of view.

    Savage shootin.

Thanks GM, I wasnt sure if the first was over processed and thought that the background in the second would be deemed as gimicky.
    details as follows….
3 light set up, two on white background, one on model(s). Taken with Canon 40d and canon 50MM 1.8. Spot metering enabled

Processing was firstly in PShop. Layer duplicated three times. Top layer (opacity approx 60%) blending mode = screen. Second layer (opacity approx 75%) blending mode = Overlay. 3rd layer opacity = 100% and blending mode = normal.

Then took the shots into portrait professional (recommend it) and applied minor skin softening and sharpened the eys and eye lashes. Finished by applying ring light reflections to eyes.

#1 Is that a toe? It’s a distraction. Also the hands would be better not cropped.
Your model looks relaxed and as if she is enjoying herself, well done.

yes thats her toes, and it is distracting alright. Wasnt sure whether to clone out or not. Felt if I cloned out it would affect the sense of dept in the image. Will give it a whirl and see if it improves….

As for the cropped hands, they are not actually cropped but slightly covered by a crease in the white sheet she is lying on which is a pity. Not a lot I can do on that one post take :-)

Can I just ask if you smoothened their skin in any way in PP? It looks like you have, but I could be wrong. There’s a lot of orange hue in there too, but otherwise they’re lovely shots. the eyes are lovely and clear which is the first thing I look at. The toe is a distraction, for a shot like that you either want her whole foot in shot, away from the head, or not visible at all. Easily cloned out though :)

I’m afraid I don’t know too much about lighting, but it looks good to me anyway! I would echo the comments about the orange skin tones. It almost looks like they’re wearing fake tan. I’m not sure what could have caused that…white balance maybe?

Went ahead and cloned out the toes See below, think it is better??. The orange hue on the skin you refer to is a result of the overlay blending option in PShop. Tends to do this BUT it prints well hence I havent toned down, that said I’m just looking at a printed version of the 2nd and think I might attempt to tone that one down as we are moving into oompa loompa territory there :-)

and yes monor skin smoothing in PP

Yes, it’s better without the toe. Can’t help thinking that to include more of the foot would have added depth, as you said.

better, but have you tried cropping in to her shoulder? omitting the leg altogether? Might work better as a closer in portrait.

beautifull photos the only fault i would have is with the eyes, they have stunning eyes in the
original photos and i would prefer them that way its more natural other than that they are
stunning photos of two beautifull girls :D
